I don't believe you can make dust out of pure ferrite. You can only magnetize it and de-magnetize the magnetized ferrite. You need to find rocks that contain ferrite dust, usually the smallest ones.
In a medium or large refiner you can put Pure ferrite as the first input and Oxygen as the 2nd input and you get rusted metal at a rate of 1+1:2. Rusted metal refines into Ferrite dust in any size refiner at a ratio 1:2.

Edit: You can do the same with Magnetized ferrite and Oxygen. The result is rusted metal at a ratio of 1+1:4

Use these green stuff you get everytime you open a green crate, these are good to refine dust. OOOppps, too late it has been said above with the correct name :)

The green goop turns into Viscous fluids 1:1. Viscous fluids turn into Living slime 1:1. Living slime turns into Runaway Mould 1:1 and Runaway Mould turns into Nanite clusters 5:1. The green goop comes from the terminals in abandoned buildings.

While tons of great advices up there, I would add my 2 cents saying that while indeed you can reverse "engineer" it to get ferrite dust out of pure ferrite, the refinery is slow to do it from rusted metal...

Really you are much better scanning rocks to get the maybe useful secondary element and mine that ferrite dust.

I see what you did there. :)

I dont think I have ever landed on a planet where ferrite dust minerals were literally more than 2 feet from my character...

Well I take that back.. I was on a plated planet once where there were two carbon flora, no minerals, and 1 lifeform fauna that looked like a walking hexagon with lasers coming out of it

Rust is everywhere and has a 2:1 ratio so it's good for storage. I send it to my freighter til I'm ready to break it down.

My problem is, I have landed on an island out at see, no launch fuel and can't find ANY ferrite dust. I'm literally trapped here. Help?

UPDATE: Nevermind, found some on a very distant island that I barely survived to reach. LoL

Its underwater. Scan things to find out what has ferrite dust.

Nope. Pure ferrite, but absolutely no ferrite dust

The refinery isn't as slow as it claims to be. It still has the bug it's always had where anything over 40 seconds or so shows up over 6 minutes. but doesn't actually take that long.

1 of the planets in my starting zone was completely barren. not even a plant.
