I made the same choice with the atlas and later changed my mind, had to travel to the centre and that took a long time, black hole after black hole it was a pain to say the least, and you don't get a choice of type of galaxy you want either.
Instructions are here on Reddit or copied here below!
https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/c97ud4/how_to_go_back_and_reset_simulation_or_go_to_any/
So when I finished the story I choose the "Refuse Atlas" option, but later wanted to be able to reset the simulation so I could then select the Green tranquil galaxy which took me to more peaceful lush worlds!! And below was my process to go back to Atlas and change your decision without losing all your game progress. If all you want to do is go to another galaxy without having to warp to the center of the universe, I also include instructions for that below. But personally I wanted to follow the game path as it was intended and actually reset the simulation. This way too you get the whole "you discovered a new galaxy" end game cinematic.
First Download Save Editor (link on reddit page)
Then back up your save files: go to C:\Users\whatver your user is\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS
Copy the "NMS" file somewhere on your computer. If anything ever goes wrong. Just replace the NMS folder with the one you just copied.
If you want to go back to the Atlas and Reset the Simulation while maintaining all your progress do the following. You can have NMS open the whole time while doing this, just Alt+Tab in and out.
- Open the NMSSaveEditor.bat
- Go to the game slot and save file you wish to edit in the "Main" Tab.
- Click "Reload"
- Go to Edit>Edit RAW JSON File
- Click on PlayerStateData Folder
- Hit Ctrl+F
- Uncheck "case sensitive" and check "wrap search"
- search for Mission":"^ACT3_STEP4",
- Should come up with some lines that look like this:
Mission":"^ACT3_STEP4",
"Progress":2, "Seed":0, "Data":0, "Participants":\[
- change the Progress line to say 0 instead of whatever number is written there.
- Close JSON Editor and click save when prompted
- Under "Main" Tab click Save Changes
- Go back into No Man Sky on the game you are editing, and reload the save you just edited. The timestamp should be accurate to the current time you are doing this. (if your Esc menu was open while you were editing Save Editor, just close the Esc menu and reopen it)
- Now when you go to your missions, you should be at the beginning of the purge mission. Now just warp your way to the Final Portal again. If you want to speed this up, Go to the "Ships" Tab in the Save Editor and add a whole bunch of warp cells to your ship inventory so you don't have to craft them all. I also bought as many hyperdrive upgrades from the space stations as I could so I could increase my warp distance.
2) If you don't care about reseting the simulation and just want to go to another specific galaxy:
- Open NMSSaveEditor.bat
- Go to the game slot and save file you wish to edit in the "Main" Tab.
- Click "Reload"
- Go to Edit>Coordinate Viewer
- Select your Galaxy and click "Save/Warp"
- Close Coordiante Viewer
- Click "Save Changes"
- Go back into No Man Sky on the game you are editing, and reload the save you just edited. The timestamp should be accurate to the current time you are doing this. (if your Esc menu was open while you were editing Save Editor, just close the Esc menu and reopen it)
- You should be in new galaxy now.
- here's a video (link on reddit page) that sorta shows some of the steps.
*sits in Eissentam*
Side note I didn't get the Atlasv1pass as it bugged out and the editor program let me add the blueprint!
Double win.
Thankyou :)
I wasn't aware of how to do that at the time, and I also didn't realize that reseting the simulation was a permanent option. from the in-game text I wasn't clear on exactly what was happening yet.
I do all the steps and when i launch the game and go into the save nothing changed.
When i check the savefile the numbers are back although higher like i didnt change it.
Do the game have a safeguard now against save file editing?
I tried 3 times, same result.
I really really really want to redo the purge so i can choose.
Could you find a solution?
