No Man's Sky

No Man's Sky

The Sameness of NMS
Every rock, every plant, every animal, every planet....the same. Procedurally generated stuff is boring. You would think that someone could come up with lots of different forms to stick together on every planet so no planet type is exactly like every other planet type. I don't care how stupid it looks. I've never been to another planet that has life. I have no idea what it should look like. But I'm pretty sure some of it will look stupid.

When I go to a fungus planet it's going to look like every other fungus planet. When I go to a desert planet it's going to look like every other desert planet. When I go to a temperate planet...well you get the picture.

Why throw all of these assets at this game and end up with the same boring thing planet after planet after planet. Every rock, every plant, every animal, ever planet, procedurally generated to look the same. Why?

When people complain about this, they don't understand just how big the game really is. You could put every single living people to create models and textures and still you will find repetition after a while.
Think about the moon and mercury? Just rocks and craters? Gas giants are all the same except different colors or patterns.
The game is too big for its own good, but it is what it is.
They will add new stuff but that repeatiness stays in some sence. Game is still fun imo.
I'm so glad I read this, because every time someone complains about the variety I find something I've never seen before. I have over 3100 hours in the game and am still amazed and astonished every single day. So thanks for complaining, my day is gonna be great now.

I dunno if I'm better off because someone is upset but I will say I find new stuff all the time. Even on planets I've spent hours on. It's Easy to fly in from space, land, hop out, and say 'every things the same here I'm heading out'. These planets are...well planet sized. I hopped on my friends game the other day and while he was off doing something I stopped at one of his planets (This a system he had spent a lot of time in). I found these super massive tunnels on a planet, you could fly ships through them and we did and we raced exocraft. The point being we had to go hunting for "something different". While I too would like some "newness" to come up and bite me on the HUD there's still plenty of things I haven't seen yet. I just have to go out and look for it.
If I may present some findings in only the last few days of my own gameplay... I'm sorry, I cannot agree:

Although there will be some recurrence of the 'pieces the game has to build with'; I think you will enjoy being pleasantly surprised if you keep playing, friend.

Good Journey, Traveller :cozynms:

I think everyone plays NMS in their own way, in many of those ways, repetition is not an issue.
There is a general sameness among the same classifications as you point out but there is uniqueness in the details. If you let it in you will start to see it.

Have you seen one of these:

That seems to be because the "scope" of the PG is not comprehensive. They could have easily PG'ed rocks, plants, etc. to be much more random. Instead its just the same models slapped together in some configuration over and over again. Indeed, it is much of the same when done this way.

@Gatun yes all of those. The OP's point would be best demonstrated to visit say, three lush planets and post screenshots. They would be indistinguishable (at least at the planet level).

@Tesityr hilariously many of the models in your screenshots are in Gatun's, just slapped together differently. I think this is the point of the OP.

Here's my 2 cents. I think the game is great. Can I imagine a better one? Sure. I can also imagine travelling at faster than the speed of life or going through worm holes. Based on current physics, neither seems likely. My real point is that this game is the first of its kind. For you young folks out there, that have grown up with computers, you'll probably live to see a space game of breath taking realism. Perhaps you'll be able to plug something into your brain and experience nearly anything. But it all has to start somewhere. So, if it makes you unhappy to play NMS, then consider the money you spent just part of your education.

While I meant to write "light" (as you know :-), general relativity seems to offer the possibility of strange outcomes. I'm thinking of the twin paradox for now. In this case the twin left at home might feel he had lead live faster than the speed of light since his twin came back still young.
No, dang it I want to go faster than life... zoom.:D:
Superficially, planets of similar biomes look similar, details revealed by exploration demonstrate considerable variety between such similar biomes, whether it be in flora/fauna occurrences and/or distribution, storm frequency and/or intensity, landscape relief and other variables such as sentinel activity. Planetary scale "sameness" becomes local scale differences, which may only register if you take the time to experience/observe these differences, and will otherwise be missed.

I've been doing this (NMS), for nearing 6k hrs, and am still finding the journey rewarding with new insights and perceptions across several galaxies, and don't anticipate stopping any time soon.

Take a closer look and you will be rewarded Traveller! :steamhappy:
