Crafting the high value items yields 16mil per item.
Larval cores are better for nanites.
Storm crystals are an option if you have the shielding.
With the addition of Beyond, we can now set up bases with unlimited power, and automated mining, resulting in potentially billions of units a day depending on how crazy you run with it.
The scrap you find is worth from 50k to 2.5mil and if the planet you find has other resources you need you can mine other things as well.
So fast way to billions will be better
'normal'... pfft... I never saw the appeal to larval core farming... never did it either...
silver or frost crystals make glass... glass makes living glass... living glass makes cryo chambers... cryo chambers make stasis devices... stasis devices (15M each) make your bank account fat and extremely happy and you never think about larval core farming, ever.
The very easiest way at the very beginning is to mine asteroids with your ship's photon cannon. Keep the tritanium to fuel your ship's pulse drive and sell the silver, gold, and platinum.
While you are exploring keep your mining laser going the entire time you are walking. You'll use the ferrite dust, carbon, and oxygen you mine this way but if you don't have the recipes to craft you can sell the gas (radon, nitrogen, and sulphurine) and you can sell the faecium and mordite. You can also unload any of the excess other items you find. You will want to keep the special plants and use them for the farmer's daily quests. The plant cuttings he gives you sell from 100,000 all the way up to a couple million.
Next is trade goods. This is a tutorial from Xaines world on trade routes. Its pre-NEXT but the vast majority of it is still valid. The only thing that I would do differently is set up bases inside the trade posts (yes its possible). All you need is a base computer, solar panel, battery, and teleporter in the rich system's trade post (you make more buying and selling in the trade posts rather than the space stations). You can name the base computers instead of naming the systems in your discoveries list and you can just buy and sell through the teleporters on the trading posts you've set up. You can do something similar with low tier trade goods and the teleporters on the space stations to start building up a nest egg.

Hunt for, dig up, and sell ancient bones. No special equipment required and most of the planets aren't extremely hazardous.
Find a planet that has salt deposits and mine salt with your terrain manipulator. You won't need much for yourself (you'll mostly refine it into chlorine to repair crashed ships). Salt sells for a lot of money. Its the most expensive non-refined non-stellar metal material in the game.
Once you get a better multi tool you can put a couple of class "S" scanner modules into your multi tool and when you scan new plants and animals you can get a thousand fold plus increase in the units awarded for their discovery per module.
Once you get additional slots in your exo suits for better hazard protection modules you can hunt storm crystals on hazard planets. Storm crystals sell for more than 500,000 each.
Buy the survey upgrade for your multi tool visor and hunt for and find a site that has Salt or Activated Indium. Drop a base computer and build a simple base that is a room with a door, a solar panel, battery, and a teleporter. (A save spot is also a good idea). Set up 2 mineral extractors, 4 supply depots, 4 solar panels, and 2 batteries. Come back every 4-6 hours to pick up your materials. Keep 500 or so Activated Indium to use for when you need chromatic metal and sell all the rest and all the salt at a vendor.
Once you have your freighter and starting nest egg build a command center on your freighter and send frigate missions out. Frigates bring back money and materials and the mission durations are from an hour up to 28 hours (that was the longest one I saw. You'll need a steady supply of tritanium and dihydrogen. The best place to get those is to find a wealthy system that sells dihydrogen jellies and tritanium and buy those in bulk from the space stations (space stations carry a larger number of items though they are more expensive than buying from trade posts). When you put 5 dihydrogen jellies into a refiner it takes 5 seconds to turn them into 250 dihydrogen.
A combination of any or all of these methods is the best way to earn units quickly. I did a new start for BEYOND and in 15 hours of play have earned and spent over 200 million units and still have about 50 million units on me. I could be far richer if I had just concentrated solely on making $$$.
How does this work, exactly? I already have an "S" Class Scanning Upgrade. I keep buying additional ones and installing them to the same multi-tool or should I be looking for something different?
The method you quote is actually a very fast method to legitly earn money. You must upgrade your scanner in a way that all upgrades are adjacent in your multitool (each one touching each other, diagonals don't count). Once you do that the entire upgrade group will change color visibly, you then get these numbers in the quote for scanning.
Another way to get money fast is to visit planet with extreme weather and collect 'Stormy Crystals', they are worth 600k for a full slot with 5 of them, and often they can be found in groups during storms.
My spreadsheet says I currently have 50.1 million units per hour being gathered, and if I teleport through my list of bases to pick everything up I get 451.3 million units in raw resources, just straight market value. Those, combined with plants which will infinitely replenish themselves but do require manual harvesting, and refined/crafted properly, would yield ~ 60,925,500,000 units from a single collection run, or 6,763,500,000 units per hour.
