There you will find both the manual and the auto save data. Delete the one you don't want (autosave) start the game and it will now load your manual save.
Make a backup first!
Going to the savegame file was the first thing I tried ...have you actually looked at the save game folder? If you have then you'd know there are six files with a prefix "save" there, but only one that is dated as modified today. ONE. I saved multiple times today. There is no file that says "autosave" or "manual save" or anything that could suggest that.
Does anyone know how the autosave is separated from the manual? Is there a command line code to force it to the manual rather than autosave?
Auto:
save.hg
mf_save.hg
Manual:
save2.hg
mf_save2.hg
These two are linked an both need to be deleted.
If you don't know which is which, just go by trail and error. Remove one and see what loads up.
Good to know which is which. Neither worked however, or perhaps eliminating one causes it to crash also? I didn't rename them, just eliminated one or the other to see if eiither worked. Neither did, so I had to go to save game from the day before.
My advice is: Don't mess with single files in your savegame folder, instead backup the entire folder and replace it if necessary.
In-game, you will create a restore point by exiting a ship (for example) or create a save by clicking a POI beacon or a save Tech item (portable).
Once you load your game via Main Menu, you will then be able to load the specific save (whilst playing).
If you've played and reloaded then you may have overwritten the point you wished to go back to.
My Travellers carry at least a Save Point portable tech as soon as it is available to me...Save beacon replaces it when that is available.
Chances are that you inadvertently overwrote the save you could have used without realising it?
Except you *CANNOT* "return in the menu" to load the 2nd save unless you are in the game already, in which case, one wouldn't need to load the 2nd save. The whole point is that the most recent save was done in an area that will crash the game before you get into it.
No it is more likely that both saves were done in an area that is a "crash zone". Sometimes you can wander into an area that is unstable, save the game, then end up crashing the game whenever you try to reload. That is what happened to me initially when updating to Beyond. I had last saved the game in an area that was unstable graphically (and functionally) in Beyond, but which worked just great in Next. After juggling the game back and forth between Next and Beyond, removing the unstable graphical elements, I was able to recover the game. However, it is still possible to wander into areas that are stable enough to play in, but will crash the game if you try to load into them.
