There are different ways to refine it, but all require copper, cadmium, Emeril or indium in some form. Of those copper is the easiest to come by, especially early in the game.

You can refine an infinite amount of chromatic metal with a handful of dust and whatever type of metal you can get. Copper to Indium. Within a few minutes you can fill every spare slot with chromatic metal.

Agreed. I just buy large amounts to store in my suit's cargo slot every now and then.

Once you have the medium or large refiner, you may never have to mine stellar metals again. There’s a process called “Chromatic Expansion”: 1 unit of a stellar metal (copper, cadmium, etc) + 1 unit of chromatic metal = 4 units of that same stellar metal.

Convert some of the resulting stellar metal back to chromatic metal, and repeat.

I’ve gone from as little as 12 units of indium to over 1000 in a few minutes, and I can do it early in the game, before I have enough units to buy the stuff in bulk.

You can boost production of chromatic metal by adding pure ferrite to the refiner along with the stellar metal. It doubles the output.

Yeah that is the best way, by the time you've gotten out of your ship instead you can have already refined 2 stacks of metal for free.

Get the medium or large refinery. Large is better cause it uses no power.

You can also just get a lot of copper by only using copper. 1 Copper + 1 Chromatic Metal = 4 Copper, you put in 3 to get 4 and don't need different resource.

If you want a more fun way and less tedium doing maths and refining every time you log on to play, then simply take your starship into the stars and blow up freighter cargo pods for chromatic metal. Scan the pods for the contents. You can also do this doubling up on the Attack Freighter missions or Attacking Pirates which makes gathering metal this way even more worthwhile.
