Each drive is for certain system color: red, green and blue. Read the description on drive.

Yeah i was under the impression that if you had the Indium it did all three. Just wanted to make sure first.

Yes, each drive provides access to the system it states, and all systems below it. If you have an Indium drive, you have access to all systems, and therefore don't need the other ones.

Thanks

If I may add to the already helpful information - they added "Class" indicators on them now, to help with this; B Class is 'less than' A Class and if you install an S Class drive engine, then you don't need to keep the B,A,etc classes, you can Dismantle them and just keep the S Class installed (Japanese nomenclature).

They look like little 'badges' on the drive tiles (Yellow, Blue, Green, etc), sort of like little banners/flags.

To those stating that they can warp to all systems with just the Indium, there's a reason. The drives in general appear to be bugged and totally unnecessary. That said, you're going to regret it when the slow gears of war that are Hello Games' bug-fixing team correct this after you dismantle your other drives.

If I may, I thought this at first too - they all actually SAY exact colours....
but they've been like this since day 1 - and now that the Class designations are added (A class takes you to B Class and C Class stars), I don't think it's going to change [we can also just rebuild the Engines...].

Why regretting? Even if the devs would change that (and they never did in the past) - regretting? Why? If you have the blueprint for these things you can easily rebuild the drives. They aren't expensive, the materials aren't hard to find. "Regretting" is a harsh word for losing nothing by deleting and building them again.

I've yet to see these star classes you speak of. In my most recent save (longest one was destroyed in the 8/29 experimental), I can jump to any star with none of the color drives. This is about as intended as the "free" Exosuit upgrades in stations.

I too have all drives installed. They do also offer some bonuses like jumprange.

Not sure how you can miss it, but I will indicate for you to help:

If you update to the latest version of NMS, you should see these badges/banners on the engine drives.

((Screenshot taken before Dismantling the C-Class Engine Drive, as it did not increase the Light-Year Distance Travel Jump maximum (eg. "514 Ly" in-game)))

Those are class designators on the tech, which are pointless on the drives as there is no differential in drive strength; this is similar to, for example, the pointless class rating on the singular buildable multi-tool techs like Advanced Mining Beam. Where are the star class ratings you mentioned?

> "pointless ratings"

The rating exists in the game, placed there on purpose by the developers.

The rating affects how much the Blueprints cost for them.
The rating is indicated at Merchants selling the Technology upgrades (eg. (A), (C), etc).
The rating matches perfectly with each 'upgrade' in distance to Warp, reaching farther stars/systems with each Class increase (eg. Blue Stars, Red Stars, Green Stars).

Yet, the"rating is pointless"..? Got it.

Edit:
Welcome to my Ignore List. I'm sorry but I cannot waste energy on arguing something obvious with you today. Peace to you.

At the glaxy map. If you don't have the appropriate drive (or better) you can't travel to those systems. Unless you're using a freighter as these can jump to any systems without the need to upgrade their engines.
If you can't travel to blue/green/red systems there is also a mentioning at the galaxy map if you hover over them: "Cadmium/Emeril/Indium drive needed".

If you didn't encounter any of these things then you're either very lucky as their are no systems around you (or unlucky if you want these materials) or you're using a freighter or you purchased a ship with an engine already installed without noticing. Other than tha? No, you can't jump to all systems if the corresponding drives are missing.

You do not need any of those as you can jump to all even non-yellow stars freely with default freighter warp drive.
