Often there's only one Gek mission you can take on a given Gek mission board at time; usually it's the one at the very top of the list. If you accidentally picked some Vykeen, Korvax, or any of the three guild's missions, you will not get credit for completing them. It has to be an actual Gek mission. To tell the missions apart, look at the icons at the left of each listing. Gek missions will have a icon that looks kinda like a cartoon "duck-bill" to me.
It is a lot easier to just give them Gek artifacts...if you have some and they ask for it. Had a dry spell on Gek Nip.
All missions have very specific but easy-to-overlook symbols that are directly tied to specific groups. Always make sure you look up the guild symbol FIRST for any quest asking for a specific race or guild. Also, if you need to raise rank fast in order to take an ethnic group quest, plaques and monuments (in systems of the appropriate ethnicity) are easy to find and automatically raise rank, esp. if you've talked out the locals in the space station already.
If the quest is to increase standing, then you can just give them artifacts. I don't recall any missions telling you specifically to complete "contracts"
