Check on planet you're scanning, it should show a list of specific ressources it hold.
Copper are common, and found in deposit. Use your scan, and look for deposit icon (4 triangle in a square formation). You'll need terrain manipulator to harvest it.

Also, while in space, look directly into a planet and scan, will show you the deposits you can find there. If you don't see copper, go to another planet ;-)

Active your vissor. On the right there should be information on what resources are on the planet. If copper is listed then you should find some in deposits in the ground. Look for resource icons while your vissor. If you do not see copper then look somewhere else. Some planets have sparse resources.

If your planet does not have copper there are other ways to make what you need.

Since this thread deserves an actually useful answer - when using the visor, mineral deposits are represented as icons floating in the sky above the ground. These are different to the discoverable minerals you find in the form of rocks, which I was hopelessly scanning with the visor for about half an hour not realising these aren't how you find Copper.

Copper is common enough that you'll usually find a deposit nearby enough to find with your visor, but it'll often only be one or two deposits on the horizon, so check every icon floating in the air until you find copper. If you're unlucky you might have to fly somewhere else and check there, but you should find some copper before long.

Be sure to hit the R key to narrow your Terrain Manipulator beam to minimum wwhen mining surface metal/mineral deposits.

Mining out a deposit with a minimum width beam takes 2-3 times as long, but...
- it yields about 4x as much total target material from the deposit, and...
- it tears up the ground much less.

All the torn up ground matters because there is a total game limit on modified terrain. It is large (?30,000? "hunks" ?), but if you ever hit it, weird things start to happen, mainly the backfilling of older excavations. (I believe there are also some lesser limits, per base area, and per planet, but not sure.)

The game pop-up tips actually recommend using your TM Restore beam feature to backfill any portion of your excavations that you can, to reduce the graphics load. Surface deposit craters can only be backfilled to the extent that the non-deposit regular ground was cut away, however.

and be sure to check the date of the forum thread too ...cos this one was 4 years old and REALLY didn't need to be revived :steamhappy::steammocking:

Would love to know where this information came from. Since I never fill in anything and have never run into any issues.

Fun fact COPPER WAS in the game at release but you could not refine it into CHROMATIC METAL until v1.50 mid 2018

Edit: Yes, I'm aware of the necro
