Edit - too late, they have plugged that hole, I just tested it. Came in handy for me initially though.
Someone please correct me if i'm wrong, but from what I've seen, the Cad and Emeril drives give around 50ly bonus each. Not much concidering the s-class mods can give up to 270 ly each

Each "next" drive covers the star types unlocked by the previous one.
So you can delete Cadmium when you get Emeril and then delete the Emeril when you get the Indium and (as Chronverge mentions in Reply#3) Mods bought with Nanites will give you better range than the earlier drives.
But yeah only Indium drive is needed to go to all star systems in range, this is a feature since start of the game even if some people tell you it is a bug which isn't been fixed in the last 3 years.
