should i just buy a ship that's barely better?
but has way more storage?

because i don't get any affordable/good ships atm and the starter ship is really bad.

i can just upgrade the weapons right?

If you need storage, what's the harm? I wouldn't worry about weapon damage, pirates drop like sacks of potatoes with the starting ship on permadeath.
Dont even need shields too, just keep a stack of sodium on the ship and you'll never die.

There is nothing you "should" do, only things you can do and want to do.
Do you want to buy it? Then buy it.
In this game you can't do anything wrong - you decide how you want to play.

For ships I care more about the cargo and tech slots. for reference 28+8 is best for shuttles, 38+12 is best for explorer and fighters, and 48+8 is best for haulers. I usually go for max slots first, then later on when I have more units than I know what to do with, I look around for a S rank ship. Honestly though the photon cannon the newbie ship starts with and some sodium and your pretty much unkillable. Mind you I did have a A rank fighter in one game and was doing 451 a hit with the photon cannon without any upgrades whatsoever for it. I'll prob go for a 38+12 fighter asap, hyperdrive range on the explorer is kinda pointless later on when you got the teleports and such.

I would go to a trading post with enough $$ and camp for one.

Set up a beacon or save point in a good place. Save. Exit. Load. Wait for the ships. Scan them. If you see a maxed out S class, zoom down and buy it. Else, exit and load again.

Will take on the order of an hour although it could be much less or somewhat more depending on the RNG gods.

My second ship is usually a shuttle. If you are looking for some additional slots, it's probably the cheapest option and you shouldn't need to sacrifice much if any in performance. At some point I'll always trade it for something I like better.

I got lucky an Artemis left me a 40/6 slot C hauler. It was definitely worth it even though It only had 8 working slots when I exchanged for it. Slots are your best friend, especially early on in the game.

By 50 hours, you will be gushing credits and will have plenty of opportunities for a better ride. I found it a lot less frustrating for the first 50 to have plenty of room. I actually still uise it because it is sufficient for what I need.

So a lot depends on how many more slots do you get. Going from 6 to 40...as I slowly fixed them...was a perfect deal.

-To answer your question, trading up early on for extra storage is very helpful for inventory management. If you are careful and stick to non-hostile systems you can avoid the need for upgraded shields / weapons for a little while.

If money is tight, you can find free ships by looking for distress signals.

Things to consider:
-You can have up to 6 ships, so you need to decide whether to trade in or buy outright.
-When you trade in a ship, you'll need to rebuild any added technology in the new ship, so there is some cost involved in that.

If money is tight or just starting out, I'd actually suggest putting your early funds into building an income stream like a farm or activated indium mine. You can get an indium mine set up in an afternoon easily, and it can pump out millions of credits worth of activated indium per hour. Once you have a few extra millions, then you can buy whichever ship you want whenever you want for whatever reason. Then if you happen to be wandering around and come across a really sweet S class ship of your dreams, you just buy that sh*t without hesitation.

Once you have enough money, I'd say upgrade your ships every opportunity, meaning if you have a B class, and an A or S class comes along, grab it, until you have a stable of S class ships that you like.

oh i didn't know you could place tech over. thanks!

will look up the indium! already building up a farm. going well. but copper mining is annoying.

i don't get the letter system. ABC and then S or something? WTH?? doesn't make sense with the colors either.
any way to easily remember it?

thanks for the tips. NMS community is really nice. which i didn't expect from a pretty mainstream indie game.

What's barely better and what's better? I don't go with esthetics or stuff like that, but: the response is in this formula you can apply for getting a good approximate of your ship's trade-in value:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Trade-in value of your ship = 2/3 new price x (slots intact : total slots)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Not counting the tech slots.

With this you can also determine if it's worth to repair once you know the repair costs involving different materials (that you all can get at space stations), and else you always get what you pay for. So there is no 'better' or 'best', it depends on your vallet.

ABC , S follows the typical scheme in most action games like Monster Hunter World or Devil May Cry to denote how good a run or combo was. In the case of NMS, it's ship capabilities ; with C being the lowest and S being the highest. C -> B -> A -> S

In almost all cases, an S class "anything" is the best you can have, but your mileage may vary. An S class Pistol Multi Tool for example, will have superiors stats than a rifle, but it'll never have more slots.

okay interesting. in dutch school numbering systems. the swimming lessons are numbered as A B C with C being the most advanced one.

i wonder.. why S. why not ABCD.. not based on logic i assume.

you never learned Academic grading in the United States in dutch school? i did
this is something that comes back in many different games and movies. even Japan uses this system i believe.
