Scan the critters nearby your set up. It will tell you what kind of bait that works with each. You need to make that bait and fuel the feeder. You may want to have more than one feeder depending on what critters you want to taime.

Geez, thats a whole lot of effort. :/
Once you have stacks of bait it becomes easier because you can carry it in the Nutrient Processor's extra storage slots, which aren't obvious at first. You can then carry bait to other planets or your next planet ready made. :)

If you're carrying stored bait you don't even need the automated feeder. The automated feeder is the mass commercialisation of bait manufacturing which will drastically cause wide spread devastation and bio-diversity murder and cataclysmic, catastrophic, environmental destruction of a planet if you do not pick up all the poop.

You can offset you carbon footprint by planting a tree decoration.

PS your menu Catalogue lists the baits and cooking recipes you might ever need.

Once you have all the blueprints and a base in the general vicinity of some cool animals it's actually very little effort. I've built a couple of feeders and harvesters around my favorite base and it takes all of a few seconds to get the bait ready. The payoff in ingredients is minimal but it's still kinda fun, especially when you have cool animals to ride.

Obviously as Johnny stated if you already have the right bait prepared then you don't have to do anything except throw it. The feeders and harvesters just make it easier if you're collecting cooking ingredients.

I am obviously going for a more stealth first person raiding mission... Where they lick the baddies to death.

If you put Units in the auto-feeder it sometimes attracts a female gek, in which case the milk, tastes like pepsi.

There's a fact you didn't know.

Oh! Cool animals to ride... Ok.
But I have a car with lazer beams on it so........ Whats the point? Just to look cool? Ok... Too much effort for no reward. xD
Tho, processing that food to T2 like dough and whatnot lets you sell stacks for 40k. Pretty decent early money there.
Thank you for the response tho. :D

What's the point in riding a horse if you can drive cars with 300+ horsepower?
DOMINATING these FILTHY animals! That's the point! DOMINATING them and EATING them afterwards. Or let them run away in fear peace.

I have Rimworld and Ark for that.

There doesn't have to be a point because the game gives us yet another choice in how we approach our adventures in our own unique way. We can earn units in several interesting ways at a any time of our choosing. All these 'little things' add a sense of atmosphere and ambience to the living breathing alien worlds we encounter.

A little humour now and then can be quite funny in a multi-player VR creature racing trek. We can of course race in exocars and have an equal amount of fun.

I think the new Beyond creature additions are implemented very well and oddly quite 'realistic' in their thoughtful animations. A huge difference from the first release of the game. Of course more improvements will always be welcome.

  • It would be cool to use a creature as a tracker or have it help defend us. I have no idea if that is complex to code or not. Very probably.

There is already AI code so... Hard to implement? Maybe. Hard to code? Probably not as it would mostly be copy paste.
