Electromagnetic generators and hotspots difficulty
I thought I understood how this worked but apparently not. I installed the scanner that is able to look for hotspots. I kept walking along with the scanner showing me how close or far I'm getting to the hotspot. Eventually the scanner said that it found a hot spot, so I immediately constructed the electromagnetic generator, but when I interacted with it, it said it was generating nothing due to low signal strength. What am I doing wrong?

Step 1: get survey scanner
Step 2: use the scanner to locate an electric hot spot
Step 3: mark it with a beacon just to be safe
Step 4: go back to your base, and start walking toward the hotspot with your build menu open
Step 5: when your base build menu vanishes, step backwards till it shows up again, plant a light or other cheap object to extend the radius of your base.
Step 6: Repeat until you reach your hotspot.

There is a limit on how far you can expand your base out, but this is basically how you are meant to do it for mining put posts, if you just want one for your main base. Just find one, plot a base down and build your generators.

i honestly HATE this system and hope that a modder adds in some other energy sources that use nuclear or anti-matter.

But why is the generator saying that it's generating nothing? I'm considering moving my entire base to be close to the hotspot, as right now my base is just a bunch of structures mishmashed randomly. The moment I located the hotspot, I built the generator on that exact spot.

I didn't connect the generator to anything yet, but I'm assuming even if it's not connected, it should say that it is generating something if it is close to the hotspot.

I think the generator has to be connected to generated anything but i am not 100%. You have to be within 300u to be able to connect it with wires/pipes without "exploiting". The 300u is from your base computer not stuctures or batteries or anything else.

IE If you place your base computer at the center between 2 hotspots mining and power say 599u from eachother it will work, but please leave yourself at least 10u wiggleroom.

Its not in your base.?

Also i would avoid trying to extend your base boundries as many people suggest with batteries or other building parts, eventually HG might close this loophole making you have to do everything over again.

Do it the hard way, do it the right way the first time.

Its not a loop hole, was added recently.

I can't make it work myself but if you want to do it yourself i am not going to stop you. But i have to see evidence of HG actually saying its intended to work like that before i believe it anyways.

No, my base is somewhat close, but not as close as I want. I built the generator outside of my base. I was hoping that once I confirmed the generator to be working properly on the hotspot, that I then move my base to it.

Can you connect it to your base power grid? If not try putting down batteries at the build limit of your base and leapfrog forward to the generator. This is how peopel extend their base maybe it works for you too.

What is the distance are we talking about?

Please keep in mind that the central point of the hot spot is NOT the only place you can grab materials. When you look at the ground you can walk a fair distance away from the hotspot for you to get 100% of the EM Power. And who cares if you get 75% or 50% of the power.... you can build as many EMP Generators as you can.

Without glitching you have about a 300 U radius from the base computer to build your base and generators. You can always put down solar power with a bunch of batteries for night. YOU can make a huge base, but then that almost encourages you to stop exploring... so maybe keep your first few bases small and/or for minerals and resources.

I have a B hotspot myself i cant get to close to my base, but i kinda gave up on it.

You absolutely do not have to place items like what someone said earlier to extend the base. All you have to do to properly connect the base to hotspot is start at your base. Run the main wire from your base to your hotspot, not the other way around. Make sure your build menu item tooltip clearly labels that it's "editing" the proper base, if not, press middle mouse until it scrolls to the correct base (must do if multiple bases nearby). Wires belonging to one base's edit will not work on another bases designated generator and it's very easy with nearby bases, connected to the same hotspot, for the game to switch them on you, you have to keep track.

Once you run the wire from your base to the hotspot, leave it on the ground, then place the electromagnetic generator down while again, making sure it belongs to the correct base which is labeled in the tooltip of the build menu. Connect the wire to the generator and now your base has power.

I can 100% guarantee once people start running the wires from the base to the hotspot and not vice-versa, and making sure that each item snapped into place, including wires, is designated for the correct base, their hotspot troubles will end. You have to read the tooltip, press middle mouse to scroll the bases nearby before placing item.

I built in between a B Class EM Power and a C Class Mineral (copper). The Base Computer is about 320U from the B Class EM Power and about 270 from the C Class Mineral (copper).

I was still able to get 100% from the B Class EM power and 100% of the minerals from the C Class Mineral.

This base needs 5 Energy extractors at the B Class EM Power to generate more power than I need currently and I have not even built vehicles (land or underwater) pads yet and I have not done personal transporters nor gardens yet...

Yep you are a bit far 637U. The other option is SOLAR and also have you search around you...if i had to do it over... i would go with a C Class Power.... sure you might need an extra EM Generator or two , but the radius is smaller and there are chances you can get inbetween minerals and gas easier.
