It's an "item" that the game would use internally to represent quicksilver, but it's not normally something you should expect to acquire in the game or find in your inventories. If you do, it means that a player used the Save Game Editor or some other means to directly add it to his own inventory outside of game mechanics and then later gave it to you.

I got one of those from the guy next to the mission agent on a space station, the one that gives you a gift the first time that you speak to him. I didn't know what to do with it so I sold it.

No. It was definitely the NPC on a space station. I always play with the other player interactions disabled under the network headings.

Regardless, there should be a means, by pressing [E] or whatever, to "open" the item and cause the quicksilver to be added to your saved game in progress. It wouldn't make sense for the game to give you a "quicksilver redeem card" that you can't actually redeem and can only sell for cash. If not, I would consider it a bug. My original comment assumed that the source was another player, but if it was a game actor then that changes everything.

I believe it is a bug as I have also received similar looking items in the past labelled "Korvax", "Gek" or "Vykeen" with a description that reads something along the lines of "currency from a particular faction" which I have also found no use for so therefore sold.

for me it was another player. another dude claimed he got it from a vendor.
