Is it normal for Auto Updates set as Disabled to still on its own download Auto Updates?
It has been doing this since the 'Beyond' update for a while and I feel like I need to ask if others are also getting this too(those who have set Auto-Updates Disabled), as in asking if this is normal for No Man's Sky? Its the only game that does it for me.

Auto Updates Disabled means exactly that. It stops a title from updating automatically, allowing you to choose which ones update and when. However if an update is available, ( which has been the case repeatedly since Beyond due to patching ) the moment you hit 'Play' , it's going to see the version mismatch and download the update to bring it current.

You cant play games on steam without updating, only in offline mode.

You are not understanding, its Auto Updating on its own.. I am not playing it, I haven't for several days

Just read my profile: "last played on Aug 20"
I do not play this game offline or any games on my steam library offline.

I am simply opening up Steam and always No Man's Sky seems to auto update on its own. Like I said its the only game that is doing that on my library... so I am guessing this definitely is not normal, right?

Then I'm going to say, no it's not normal. If it -is- updating despite the flag being set, that speaks of a greater issue where HG and NMS are somehow bypassing Steam controls.

Think it's a steam client thing. My wife has a couple games she doesn't want updated, until she decides to update them. Her client never seems to fail at randomly deciding to update them anyway though.

OP, Contrary to what you say in your title, you can not disable auto updates, but only set games not to update while you launch the game, so the answer is YES: Auto Updates are on their own except at the very moment you launch the game if an update is in the queue. Steam doesn't want you not to update a game, and will not allow you to do so, for that you would need to ALWAYS play it offline as long as you don't want to update.

However, there is an unsupported way to avoid game updates. It's in this guide:

That article recommends using a malformed URL to initiate the Steam console, and it won't work. The URL is malformed and the author lacks the experience to even know it. The correct form that does work:

steam://open/console

"steam" itself is a protocol like "https" and so needs to be treated as such. Anyone who has ever even bothered to look at the Windows shortcuts for Steam games should know this.

Note that after using this command the browser tab will remain open and active, but it can be closed once the console is active in Steam.

Thanks for the additional info, I have never gone through all this (for the games I want to have control over updates I chose GoG to play them). I will add your tips in my notes together with this guide.

I noticed in Google results that there are other guides in Steam and YouTube and elsewhere that do show the correct URL, so the mistake may be limited to just that one article. It might be useful to search out those alternatives, in case there's anything else this particular author has gotten wrong.

This. The Steam update system is a bit of a mess, and one of the main reasons why I'm doing most of my gameplaying elsewhere these days. I mean, they still don't have an account-wide option to not auto-update, leaving the user to set each and every game to their preference. That's just petty.

For the record, I haven't had any issues with the auto-update system in GoG Galaxy.

Settings > Downloads > Download restrictions > Only auto-update games between: [input time]

I set mine to 05:00 - 06:00 cuz I never play on those times, let alone have the computer on that late (or early, however you want to call it). In combination with individually setting the "disable auto-update" state for every game you care about it works flawlessly.

While that is true, that is not his complaint. Please read the OP again. :P
He is specifically complaining about it updating even though he said he set Auto-Updates to Disabled.
Which prevents the game from ever updating normally, until you specifically try to launch the game.
Somehow his computer is drunk. :P
I read the OP, think further than you nose is long is how they say it here where I live...
Lil Puppy Sep 25, 2019 @ 7:08pm
Steam doesn't have the option to not update games anymore, at least mine hasn't for over 2 years now.
