How does hello games profit from nms?
Is it really from new sales only? I bought this game for about 20€. I won't be surprised if they're gonna add paid updates.

They got a image to maintain though. I'm curious how nms will evolve.

hello games changed in my eyes from a scam to a example of good game/community design. No other company has managed to do that for me. Hats off for that.

Well, I don't think they are that worried about the update costs. I think the hype around what they do causes new purchases. I know the VR made me buy it. I owned it at the start but refunded it because IMHO it was terrible. But now, I am obsessed with it. I don't even use the VR now because I actually like the control of keyboard/mouse much better. But ... I am sure I will play the VR from time to time.

So my answer is... I think they will be fine. If they charged for major updates a minimal cost, I would be happy to pay it.

Yes, its really from new sales and from their other projects... 'you wont be surprised' eh? then you haven't been paying attention... not even a little bit....

If I had to guess... once they "finish" the game in other words once they add all the updates they feel necessary, they may create giant DLC content that might be paid? Of course this is just speculation. But I could see that happening. I would gladly buy them too. I love this game :D

I couldn't imagine then trying to push $60 DLC, maybe 10-15, 20 at the most?

they've said ~1 mil of VR set owners already owned NMS before Beyond with VR support dropped.
https://uploadvr.com/no-mans-sky-vr-one-million/?amp

Let's say it was combined number based on PSVR and Steam stats provided to HG.

So it's at least 20 mil Euro to 60 mil max. Not bad for a small indie Studio don't you think?

this site reports 2-5 mil copies of NMS sold:
https://steamspy.com/app/275850
and it's for Steam only...

I think they get money from people who buy the game. Just guessing.

I'd like to see the existing gameplay framework become home to tons of quest-giving NPCs. Like skyrim/fallout levels of factions, NPCs, and quests. Preferably done though serious professional work paid for by DLC money. If not that, a community quest editor.

They got most money from the first months of release no doubt, even if it went pretty bad. My idea is that they are rather investing in getting better reputation for future projects sales.

Also its very likely that they are already working on other projects by now.

Because of the way the game is set up- it would be almost impossible for them to sell DLC. They would have to create multiple secured servers...which would put the kabosh on what little MP exists. Right now there is no reasonable way to segregate assets from access by all users. The save game editor would make a mockery of any attempt.

They could do what Destiny did and let everyone play together and let all players see the dlc content but lock them from interacting with it. I can see them start to add DLCs once they're totally satisfied that they've gone well above and beyond and fulfilled every "promise" they made pre launch. I feel they would be cheap and far between but would be great in quality.

Right now, I think the dev team is happy sinking hundreds of hours into the game for little to gain besides reputation and satisfying their player base because from launch, they made way more money than they were ever hoping for and probably have enough in reserves to pay themselves for years to come so they can just devote all their time to nms. This is just for fun at this point, they could probably all retire right now, team of 15 brought in like $60mil at launch and more since.

We are so cynical these days that even when a dev does something good for gamers we are suspicious they must be planning some kind of future cash in. Hello Games is a private company, which means they don't have shareholders that they are beholden to. This is what it looks like when a company does right by its customers, and they have been rewarded with a massive user base over three hardware platforms and multiple vendors. They are making a huge amount of money on new sales on all those platforms.

Ah-yes ... the Engoodening continues...

I am so happy all the Genius-talent at Hello Games was able to Zero-to-Hero this... am glad they now have, "probably" enough money to become (ironically) a "Triple-AAA" Game studio.

Cannot wait for all the amazing stuff/fun that money will bring us gamers into NMS and whatever amazing NEW things on the horizon. They are now able to spread their wings i would imagine.

They deserve it, for taking on such a bold endeavor, building an entirely new game engine from the ground up and plugging it into an "complete unknown" of a game concept as No Man's Sky was born-out to be.

(Have you EVER before seen such a MASSIVE Wiki for only one-single-video-game ?)

(and everyone's seen this... amiright... :)

P.s. You'all_gotta-know they richas'F after going through all that and coming out the other side as, Hero's!
