To all the people still crying about mutliplayer...
If you had any understanding how hard game programming is you'd know how hard it is to reprogram a game of this scale from singleplayer to multiplayer you'd know that the chances that they're ever doing it is very slim.

While of course i don't know how exactly this game is programmed i assume that pretty much all important stuff, like the AI-stuff (like animals, ships, etc,), player state, ressources, collision detection, money, ship state, etc is done on the players pc, aka client-sided, because computing all this for a bazillion planets would kill any server.

Having all this client-sided also means that in a real multiplayer setting you'd have tons of hackers, because if your player state is calculated on your pc its easy to manipulate things like players health. On the other hand, having all this client-sided also means that tons of mods are possible because there is so much that can be manipulated on the clients side.

You can't just change this all from client-side to server-side without basically reprogramming the game, and probably the games engine, from scratch, so please stop expecting multiplayer for this ever or anytime soon.

Crying and spamming won't make a singleplayer-game engine suddenly become a multiplayer MMO-engine.

It would probably be small matchmaking sessions in which one player is the host for a small group. Only one star system exists at a time in NMS, so they could limit the group to the host's current system. Making this happen isn't as difficult as you might think. With the money HG has now they can probably afford to dedicate one or two people to writing netcode for a while. It's not unreasonable to believe that HG will add some form of multiplayer in the future. They've mentioned it in the past[www.gamespot.com] and it would probably be beneficial in regard to the average consumer's perception of the game.

the only real challenge is to protect one player's base and freighter and ship from another. Everything like that would need an extra few bytes to flag it as being owned by whoever and untouchable by others. Then you need a way to see each other, so the instances of the game have to be merged, which should not be all that hard but it would require more bandwidth and communicaiton between the clients. I think someone said the same planets were totally different across 2 instances of the game so there is a mismatch there somewhere that would need to be reconciled. It wouldnt be minor surgery to the code, but neither is it insurmountable. Then the real issue hits. If they did all that, so what? 10 people in the whole player base meet up and do ... what? There would need to be some sort of way to interact with each other in a meaningful way. Have to add and animate some emotes, at the very least.

An online multiplayer game with much client side processing - sounds like another game The Division. The developers were getting stick for leaving the game too open to hackers.

We have players here that actually believe that HG had started developing multiplayer, but "cut it" out of the game two months before release because it wasn't ready.

A really good multiplayer space-based strategy game?

Star Citizen looks like it can answer the mail, though it's a subscription MMO.

Anyone here playing it?

There in no reason this game can't be multiplayer. Other games of this type do it. Osiris Dawn, Astroneer, Mass Effect: Andromeda will have it, etrc, etc, etc... They just need to make a few adjustments to the games mechanics and add it. It isn't rocket science. I just want to see co-op play at least.

Uhm...OP the number of people crying for multiplayer around here is in single digits (to none) most days so your post is basically....kinda redundant?

Yes when its probably half playable which might take a year or two. At the moment its not optimized well.
I am waiting on it too, for my MP mmo space fix. Just waiting for more pc part upgrades, as well as a bit more content and optimization. But soon it for sure is on my list. It's got some good potential and features.

I can't wait for star citizen to finish! I didn't even know about star citizen until no man's sky came out, but now I have something to look forward to.

Thanks for the information. Went ahead and created an account - purchased the base-line $35 dollar boat, so I can try out what they've done so far.
