Terrain Manipulator?

Just got this... in a new Permadeath mode game. Found it in a shop and bought it. I'm able to make terrain... but I have not figured out how to get myself protection from the elements. I built a cave that I can walk right into. What am I missing?

Also, how do I use it to dig out terrain and go underground?

the protection from elements seems to only work with already generated terrain. If you dig a hole and get some terrain over your head it should work.

oh i forgot to mention dont dig down too far on some planets or you will find yourself swiming in lava.

How do you use it to dig down. Btw, just died and lost everything :)

when you have the terrain manipulator selected it should show you the options at the bottom center of the ui. for digging down jsut point the gun at the ground and right click. :)

Yep, and it is super fast and uses plutonium like a bandit. It is fun to use on the disabled freighter missions.

It digs too fast for my liking.
It would be better if it started at about 1.5X the mining laser's dig speed and got affected by the mining laser upgrades.
That would make digging caves much easier to control.

Interesting on the right click. I'm using a Xbox controller, so need to figure out which key it is. Not clear.

Should be the same button you use to zoom in with the analysis visor.

I'm hoping this doesn't replace the grenade because the terrain manipulator is expensive to recharge.

Grenade launcher is still there. I accidentally switched to it and blew myself up once already.

Still haven't found it. They should right in a code where it should be among one of the earliest techs you learn from the manufacturing places. Maybe within five generations. I know there are blueprint vendors, but I can't trust the RNG to be favorable there either.

Yeah, the only button that seems to do anything is the place terrain, can't switch modes or anything, hopefully they fix soon, I normally play at my desk anyway lol so can just switch back to mouse for now. Weird thing is that mouse and keyboard controls work fine straight away >< anyone with a normal xbox/ps4 controller having the same issue?
