Upon reaching the centre?

I am a very slow careful player who takes no risks and spends a lot of time in each system along the Path Of the Atlas to the centre. I have just built my base and this got me thinking what happens when you reach the centre.

I know that once you reach the centre with 10 Atlas Stones you progress to a new galaxy, but once in this new galaxy can you still teleport back to your base in the first galaxy or do you have to start a new base in the new galaxy?

haven't done it yet, but from what I've read, you cannot return to the old base, but you get (some of?) the parts back in the previous base bin or something.

but what I read said you do retain your freighter? I'd be interested in a reassurance on these things for the current state of the game myself.

From what I have read you don't need Atlas stones to reach the center, those are for spawning a new star. And your ship(s) and freighter move to the next galaxy, just broken. Or that's what I understand. You can't return to the previous galaxy.

The Atlas Path and the Center of the Galaxy are two completely different paths. The Atlas Path takes you to a different place, to the atlas interface, when you have all 10 stones, you present them and a new star is created (you are not taken to it).
When you reach the Center of the Galaxy (and it is much harder to reach than the Atlas destination), as it is much much further away) you get transported to a different galaxy.

Oh, so they did change that? When I reached the centre (a long time ago) the things I mentioned happened, There are a lot of videos on YT where players talk about that, too.

I've reached the center twice. Once before any updates, and once after the Pathfinder update. Both times I didn't lose anything. Only some tech was broken and had to fix it. First time I finished my Atlas Path I woke up on a new planet with everything except the blueprints gone. This was before all updates. Later on I finished it once again but absolutely nothing happened, I only got the note that a new start was born and that's it, I continued the journey.

Thanks everyone for all the info. I think I will hold off for now on following the Path Of The Atlas and work towards doing everything I can in the starter galaxy. I have a maxed out suit and multi-tool. Currently working on base and getting my ship upgrade from 29 slot's with 9 slots needing repairing to a max hauler ship. Also need to work on getting credits to purchase the freighter currently only have 700,000 credits so a long way to go yet.

You never did lose all your progress. You have to repair things from being tossed into the next galaxy but you don't lose your gear. Took me a day to repair my stuffs, but now enjoying Hilbert and it's red center. The other thing to note is that you will want to either hand pack your base, or take the leap and it will pack up partial materials in the Previous Base storage container. You will need to set up a new base in the next galaxy yes. So far there is no way to go back to the first one, unless you keep an extra save file for Euclid. (I do for the Galactic Hub Project, because my furthest progress save is now in Hilbert.)

Take your time though, enjoy your exploration, but don't fear if you do get the curiousity bug to go to the next one.

I keep slowly moving to the center and each galaxy, it's just my exploration direction. Who knows what we may find out there one day. It spurs me onward.

Just be sure to save before you jump, if you are worried. It never hurts. ;)

it never reset your ship/tool, what it did was break everything which mean't if you didnt have stuff hoarded, you were probably going to be stuck for a while.

Path of the Atlas is fine, doesn't change anything for you, but it's a great way to up the number of words you know since every Atlas Station provides a lot of them, and you gain blueprints by completing milestones and going to Polo in space anomalies which mostly appear on the path to atlas.
