Anyone have a workaround?
Activate steam overlay. Doesnt work without it.
Pressing the Steam F12 hotkey always works. Just make sure the Photo Mode menu bar is hidden before pressing F12 or it will be in the screenshot/photo too.
I have tried waiting between shots in case it was related to overhead, but the bug seems unrelated to overhead or current processing. Of course, I also have a lower level video card (GTX 960 with only 4GB RAM).
All screenshots, whether F12 or mouse click in Photo mode, always end up together in:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\nnnnnnnnn\760\remote\275850\screenshots
where "n" is a numeral.
It's possible to change the Steam screenshots folder, though, so anyone "missing" photos should check their Steam settings. Worse, sometimes there's a "click" of a photo being taken but no photo is actually taken -- no thumbnail pops up in the lower right of the screen. This is a continuing issue, though seems less frequent now.
F:\Steam\userdata\32846196\760\remote\275850\screenshots
No reference to NMS. None of them are tied to games. Great. More magic.
Note that it isn't in my Doc's, Pics, Vids (which aren't on the C: drv anyway), or the game folder on the M: drive. Curse B.Gates and Drv Letters.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\NUMBERS\760\remote\275850\screenshots\thumbnails
When NMS attempts to save a picture in the folder, Windows Security sees it as an attempt to alter a folder without permission. Check your notifications and you'll probably see something like "Folder Control Prevented An Unauthorized Access, Click To See Settings." When you click, you get a list of different programs that attempted to make changes on your machine.
There's a dropdown called "Actions" at the bottom of each reported attempt. Look for a notification about 'NMS.exe,' click Actions, and tell it to allow the program to make the changes.
Now, there's one weirdness. Folder Access Control reports that it blocked access to "%userprofile%/Pictures", which is where non-Steam NMS stores pictures. When you allow the action and go back into the game, you can snap a picture as normal. However, if you go to your "%userprofile%/Pictures" folder, you will find a new "No Man's Sky" folder... which is empty. The obvious thought is that it still didn't work.
But it did. If you go to the Steam screenshots folder ("\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\nnnnnnnn\760\remote\nnnnn\screenshots")... the new Photo Mode screenshot appears.
Apparently what's happening is NMS automatically checks to see if the "No Man's Sky" folder exists in the "%userprofile%/Pictures" folder before attempting to save the picture. If it doesn't see it, it attempts to create it, but Windows Security blocks the attempt. This causes the photo save to abort, and unfortunately we don't get notice that it's happening. Once NMS has access, it creates the folder on the next attempt, but then follows the *Steam* version's path, putting it in the Steam screenshots folder.
In other words, the file save action is redirected to Steam's screenshots folder, but the original folder check action NMS uses on other Windows installs still takes place, and failing that folder check/create action aborts the file save action, even though it's not saving in that folder.
This doesn't affect everyone, because not everyone has the same Folder Control Access settings on their machines, but because it's nearly silent it's hard to see it's happening.
TL;DR -- the problem is NMS checks for a destination folder in "%userprofile%/Pictures" and tries to create it but Windows Security (depending on settings) blocks the folder creation, aborting the file save action. When NMS is able to create its folder (and verify it's still there later), then it saves the screenshot in the *STEAM* screenshots directory at \Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\nnnnnnnn\760\remote\nnnnn\screenshots".
I used photomode to take a screenshot with the gate runes so I could share or go back at some point and the screen shot is in this folder
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\74714241\760\remote\275850\screenshots
and did show up in the screenshot manager
BUT it was just no GUI shot with no runes or anything. Anyone know how to fix or change this?

I believe it is F12 while you are in photo mode.
It is only with F12 that the row of glyphs can be included in the image.
But you also need to enable the glyphs to be displayed (if they are not already visible), with left shift you can change the gui mode (glyphs on/off).
