Alternatives?
Is there an alternative you can suggest to NMS?
I'm not shelling out €60, cause the game still feels like it is maybe worth closer to €20 (and I doubt it'll hit that in the Summer sale).

So another game where you can visit planets, trade, upgrade your ship....etc
I liked the idea of THE LONG JOURNEY HOME, but the gameplay I've watched disappointed in terms of crew interaction and ship control.

Sorry if this isn't the best place to ask or not even a real alternative :P

Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen and a slew of low budget space games with decent ratings under the 'space' tag on the Steam store.

I asked the same thing long ago, and the answer is still... nothing like NMS. Other games do some things much better, but not all at once.

Evochron and Elite Dangerous are the closest at the moment in my opinion.

ED has advanced ship customization, from the power plant to fuel tank to cargo racks, shield generators, several different types of scanners and individual weapon hardpoints. Every choice is a tradeoff between weight (which affects jump distance), performance and price.

Trading is one of the three main "careers" in the game and it's a well-rounded system, with a simulated economy that actually makes sense. Commodities are cheaper in planets that manufacture/produce them. Supply/demand follow the size of colonies, volume of business and policy changes. Black markets allow for high-risk, high profit smuggling operations, if you're going the Han Solo route.

To be quite honest, In my opinion the most thrilling part of trading was scouting for profitable trade routes. In the beginning, working a trade route in a multi-role ship wasn't nearly as much fun, though.

Hauling commodities back and forth 30+ times in a row got old quick, but the credits piled up and after a couple of weeks I was able to spec a real trader ship and a fighter, so I could alternate between roles when the grind became too heavy.

Playing as a bounty hunter/mercenary was much more fun and just as profitable, specially after joining a Powerplay faction and acquiring certain perks while combining efforts with other players in order to claim systems to our cause.

When I left the game I had 9 ships, each one fitted to a specific role. Exploration, mining, several different fighters, a huge trading vessel, a smaller cargo ship for smuggling operations.

All in all, ED is a much more polished game. On the downside, it has a very steep learning curve, progress is slow and planet-side exploration isn't really that interesting.

Starbound is essentially a 2D version of no mans sky in many ways
If you don't mind early access, this could be a nice alternative, though it doesn't have all of the element you want to have yet.....

I've played the Long Journey Home and the concept is great and that's where it stops, the rest is very disappointing. I played it for 2 hours or so, by that time I had enough of the game. Clunky controls, odd execution of the concept, but still a great idea..... just like NMS..... great idea, very disappointing execution.

You can do a LOT in this game, maybe not super graphics but the gameplay is there.

And... that was my problem. People recommending a 2D side scroller, a pure flight-sim, a strategy game, etc. As an alternative to NMS.
Then you have to accept that there is no game currently on the market that does all they things that NMS do. And so, the search continues.

+1

i think this one fits the bill. only downside it isn't as "pretty" as NMS, but the game aspect is deeper.

I've clocked up 32.5 hrs on Starbound, but haven't revisited it in quite some time.
Think I need to catch up on a play-through video, just to get see further progression than I made and see if it's worth revisiting.

its been updated. i haven't gone back in over a year though. TBH it looks like NMS gets more ujpdates than SB does from my casual lurking of both communities.

only difference is that SB has full modding support and some really deep mods available

exactly this, i own couple of "space sim/survival/exploration" game, but still nothing came close to NMS at least in some aspect that i love

Just gave a second chance to Empyrion, and really...? The planet models, textures, and... pretty much everything is way below NMS, it screams Early Access... NMS may lack content, but the content that exists at least looks and feels complete and "solid".
Got to my "base" and it looks like a children's treehouse, the controls and inventory are very unintuitive.
I didn't actuall see any ships, much less got into spaceflight, but what i did saw was very disappointing. I get that it might be deeper, and maybe it's more realistic than NMS, but at least for me NMS is a much nicer game.
