Is there any point to feeding the alien animals?
The little smiley face pops up if you give them the right food. What does this do exactly?

Yes, in some quests you need to find some materials where you actually need to do this.

you have to do it a small number of times to get coperite, then you can grow all you want or need. The animals will also sometimes point to stuff on the ground that you probably saw without help, like lootable flowers. They also let you get better screenshots when fed, as they won't run away anymore, so you can get other poses easier.

"A crystalline compound that can be harvested from the faecal matter of some species. Creatures can be fed to encourage the formation of coprite crystals."

Apearently regular farming was not enough in this game, so they added magical crystal turds for you to collect to.

there is a point if you want to complete one of the quests or farm mordite. Or just have a little fun with it.

That's the ecosystem in which "almost anything can happen", according to Sean Murray.
You shouldn't be surprised that he lied about that too. Liars gonna lie.

That means they have added "the point" months after release.
That's fantastic.
no you could feed them and get different resources at launch, not just coprite. you could use or sell those resources, there was a point.

what it does mean is that your false statements many months after release has no point.

Suppose things only happened for you when you used hacks, is this true ?

not to mention it is fun to befriend an animal and have it be happy about your presence rather than fleeing in abject terror. I would call that a point. not everything in a game has to be explicitely structured to impact a number in a quantifiable way. there is more to games than that. if a player NEEDS to have tons of predefined quantifiable activities that they can choose to do or not do, then that player probably is never going to be satisfied with a sandbox game.

The whole 'point' of a sandbox game is that there are few predefined 'points' and lots of possibilities, preferably with a complex set of possibilities, that the player can then find purpose for. Would i like to see NMS get a more complex set of possibilities? absolutely. but complaining that some activity has no point is just bizarre, particularly when it does have a point.

I see. Petting misshapen creatures to obtain a crock of crap or an emoji is a reward in itself.

THAT is the advanced ecosystem we were sold, and you don't see any problem with it.

Seems like you're just playing the apologist again.

i didn't buy the game to feed animals, it was a neat thing that exists in the game that I wasn't aware of until after i was playing it. I bought the game to have a universe full of star systems to explore at my leisure, and the game has provided that beautifully.

but in response to your statement, Yes i feel the reaction I get from animals when i feed them is neat and rewarding. enough so that I still do it from time to time when I see a neat animal I want to befriend. I get that such things aren't for everyone, but it's bizarre that you'd spend your time criticizing others for enjoying that.

Bad vibes man, bad vibes... all that hate is going to burn you up.

I was wondering if you could keep feeding one and basically make it a pet or something. I guess I should have been more specific in my original question instead of phrasing it in such a way as to attract haters to the thread. Oh wait, haters gonna hang out and hate regardless.

each time you feed it, it does it's little routine for a limited time. you can feed it again to make it do it again but you can't make it permanently your friend.

I'm not criticizing you for enjoying magic turds and emojis.

I'm just pointing out that it's stupid to say things like "well I like it, therefore I don't think people should criticize it", for a very simple reason:

You can't just explain away all the many flaws in the game armed merely with your personal tastes and your intolerance of different opinions.

It's just silly.

Every time someone brings up anything they find lacking, boring or stupid about the game, some poor soul just HAVE to tell everyone how feature X is not really important and doesn't really detract from the game and in fact is just one of the best things evar, so people don't really have any reason to complain about it.

The game hasn't been out for a year and I've seen that same tripe being presented as some sort of justification for a whole lot of nonsense, from multiplayer to advanced physics and ecosystems to maps and a decent flight model or even just the ability to look around in your cockpit.

The thing is, no one cares if you think the game is so awesome that you don't see any reason to discuss its many flaws in any depth. That might as well be true FOR YOU.

So, by all means, enjoy the game as much as you can - no one cares. Ignore the cumulative effect of all the missing/badly implemented features all you want, if that's important to you.

But you have no business telling other people what is or isn't important to them, or what they should or shouldn't complain about, or whether their frustration is valid or not.

When you do that, YOU are criticizing people for their opinion about the game, not the other way around, and I hope I don't need to explain why it is ridiculous for someone in your position to be playing the victim card.
