Multi tool hunt, tips needed
Im searching for a S class mining tool (pistol) i did over 200 jumps searching also for nice Hauler( found) , but i cannot get a better than A class alien tool.
i also notice that in every system the diversity resumes to 2-3 models that repeat ...

if anyone have tips related to even the solar system, when i started searching for better ships i noticed that systems with no "p", "f" , just simple ex: B0, have better symmetric architecture somehow, and i wonder what other pattern applies to multi tools, in order to reduce the jumps...
didnt see any class S tools yet :(

edit. p.s. - didnt found any pistol with more than 8 slots and at least class A either

While I don't know if there is a trick to finding multitools, I do know that even an Alien C-class multitool is far superior (potentially I suppose) than an A-class anything.

I've seen pistols with 12 or more slots.

One thing I haven't seen is an Experimental-type multitool, ever.
i've actually seen 2 different S multitools, i still have never seen an S ship... it's just luck.
There is a trick or 2 :)
Find a vykeen who has a busted suit and wants 100 carbon. Save the game. Repeat his mission and reload until you get something decent.

The best pistol ive found was an A class 10 slot.
The best rifle I have found, and use, is an S class max slot.
I havent found a good alien one yet.

I've just put in about ten or twelve hours of play doing nothing but going from outpost to outpost looking for an A-class 24-slot replacement for my legacy 24-slot tool (I figure that my chances of finding an S-class like that are zilch). This was on two different Vy'keen planets and the Korvax planet I'm on right now. In all that time the best I've seen was an A-class 16-slot tool, but most of them are way lower than that - C-12, B-13, C-9, and so forth.

I've got to say that I'm really tired of looking at one 5-slot C-class tool after another, which is basically what I woke up with back in August of last year when NMS was released and I started my first game! Being offered that thing over and over is kind of an insult, not to mention irritating.

I think I'll go back to one of those Vy'keen planets and try jonnin's trick - thanks, jonnin! - I'll let you know if it works for me.

Doing the save and reload trick for about 2 hours, I got 2 s class rifles, 0 s class pistols, and about 200 A/B/C pistols and rifles, most were junk. I skipped the first S rifle on purpose to see what was availabe... it was about 4 rifles same name and all but random quality (abc/s) and 3 pistols (same deal but never got the s)

That ^^^ cost me 100 carbon. (And the 2 hours)

Good luck!!

This will be long:

I've just finished a 210-trial test of Jonnin's trick of being offered a multitool upgrade from a Vy'keen attendant at an outpost, then reloading from a prior save, repeating it again and again until you get the multitool you want.

On a Vy'keen planet, I found the outpost and the Vy'keen warrior I was looking for: "Grah! The interloper weapon is pathetic...I will replace it." With my ship on the landing pad and a restore point saved when I left it to go inside, I checked out and declined the offered replacement multitool, reloaded the game from the save, and repeated it, over and over, 210 times in a row. Here's what I learned:

First of all, the attendant seems to have just a short list of multitool models that it can choose from. In this case, there were four C-class tools, three (or maybe just two) B-class tools, one A-class tool, and a rare S-class tool identical to the A-class tool. Here they are, along with the number of times they were offered in my test:

C-5: 32
C-6: 21
C-12: 7
C-13: 36
B-13: 1 (this might have actually been a C-13, mis-recorded)
B-14: 29
B-15: 31
A-16: 36
S-16: 2

The numbers here don't add up to 210 because I didn't start recording the data until I'd tried it a number of times, but they're representative of the entire trial. No other models showed up at any time.

What's notable is that there is one, and only one, A-class model in the list, and it was offered no less frequently than any other model. So HG is not trying to hide the higher-class tools from us. The S-16 model, BTW, showed up on trials #85 and #148.

This doesn't necessarily say that you might not find some other model in the multitool cabinet in an outpost. All it's saying is that this seems to be the list that's available to the attendant (although I think they're the same). in about five hours of scouring this particular planet and another in the system by visiting outposts and checking the cabinets I do not recall seeing any other models besides these.

My conclusions: if you want to use this technique, which is fast (about 45 seconds per trial) compared to my previous technique of flying around and stopping at outposts and looking in cabinets, here's a strategy to consider:

1. Use this technique at an outpost maybe thirty times in a row; by that time you should have seen all the models in the list;
2. if no tool shows up that you are interested in, go find another Vy'keen planet or system to look in;
3. if an A-class tool does show up that you like, take it, then:
4. keep trying, up to about a hundred more tries, to see if the S-class model shows up;
5. if the S-class model shows up, take it.

Keep in mind that this test was run on just one planet, in one system. My previous experience on two planets in the system was that they both offered the same list of tools, so I think it's something that applies to the entire system.

If anyone is interested in trying to reproduce my results on a planet of their own, please share your results.

I traded an S-class rifle (24 slots) for an Experimental tool with a 19- (and now 20-) slot tool as it had much better stats than the S class rifle

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=906839795

my base planet has an outpost which offers a similar Experimental tool, but no more than 20 slots, as well as a monolith which offers the same (with broken slots).

The S- class rifle is the only S class I have seen - had a pic, but have deleted it.
eh. sounds too boring. i'd rather have the continued excitement of seeing what this next location has.
I' ve tried multiple reloads in attempts to upgrade my tool at

outposts
monoliths
wreck beacons

and although I have not been recording my results, most sites seem to cycle through 3-4 different weapons, in different configurations.

eh, i usually find a A/S class pistol and rifle in each system i go to while on the hunt for A/S class alien or experimental tools.

The thing is, every NPC you talk to can offer you a multitool mission. Also, each NPC on the same planet will offer exactly the same multitools. Once you've talked to one, leave the planet.

To get an NPC to give you the multitool mission (2 per race).

Talk to NPC.
If its not the multitool mission, cancel out of convo without choosing anything.
Save, Reload
NPC now offers you a different mission.
rince and repeat till you get the multitool ones.

NPC missions arent random, they cycle through a list of 22-23 missions. Once you get to the multitool one you just keep reloading until your confident you've seen all the offers.

DONT FORGET TO RELOAD ONE FINAL TIME!

before leaving the planet. NPC missions are not tied to specific NPC's, its like a global mission list. if you reload and talk to a NPC anywhere else in the universe, it'll offer you the same mission. Handy when visiting new planets, i've been repeating the multitool mission over dozens of planets in dozens of systems with this.

Also, when you find a NPC shelter (the ones with multitool box on wall) the tool itself will change *once* after the first reload and thats it. Sometimes the NPC himself with be swapped with a different one too.

*edit*
and keep some platinum on hand. you can build save points inside NPC structures to speed up the save/reloading.

and yeah, each NPC/planet has 2-5 different models of multitool, with 2-3 grades each. Generally if there is a A grade pistol/rifle you can get a S grade eventually (it may take an hour or so of reloading).

*edit*
for those that dont want to save scum, there is a (more time consuming) alternative. Each shelter on the planet sells a different multitool from the list the NPC's use. you can *cough* simply visit all the shelters around the planet.

I actually bought my B grade alien tool from the weapon box in the end after finding 7 shelters on the planet. you do need to save/reload *once* at shelters as the weapon box changes, but only once (this was while i was testing if all the NPC's offered the same, and they did. all offered the same alien tool and S grade rifle + 2x C grade pistol variants).

and, as far as I can tell, # of slots and quality isnt tied to your current items. I went from 8 to 24 on a new character, at great expense (was the buy-it wall hanger, unfortunately).

Well, jonnin, I owe you one. I tried your technique to try to upgrade my legacy C-class 24-slot tool, hoping for an A-class tool and daydreaming about an S-class, and I was successful in less time than I expected to have to spend. It took me two Vy'keen systems and four planets before I found an NPC that was working from a list that wasn't all c5's and c6's and so forth. When an A-24 started showing up I took a deep breath, declined it, dismantled all the upgrades on my legacy tool for the resources, and kept reloading and trying again. It took about 60 restarts - way sooner than I expected - before the S-class 24-slot tool showed up and I snapped it up instantly.

Thanks for the great tip!

Sometimes the gods of the random number generator smile down on you from the heavens, even when you don't deserve it:

After scoring my first S-24 multitool using jonnin's reload-and-repeat method, I switched to one of my other games that was in the same condition and decided to try it again. I flew up the hill to my nearest outpost, a thirty-second flight, walked through the door, and on a whim decided to look in the multitool cabinet before I started. And there, of all things, was a gleaming new S-24 multitool looking back at me!
Same basic technique seems to work with ships too. Sitting in the space station, saving and reloading the same basic form factor ships will keep appearing but class and slot arrangement changes.
