Guacamelee is a solid experience. I love metroidvanias, but never really found myself enjoying Guacamelee's combat which is much more beat-em-up combo/action based. That being said, the game's platforming exceeded my expectations, Guacamelee has some great platforming sections that have a good level of challenge. The story has some good humor to it, and it's clear the developers were focused on fun first. The art style is nice, and environments are generally pretty; however, there are these large colored blocks that signal you need a certain power up to progress. I really wish they did this in a way that fit the environments, they stick out like a sore thumb and almost give a "baby's first metroidvania" type vibe.

I certainly wouldn't add Guacamelee into the pantheon of metroidvania greats, but it's undoubtedly a quality title. The one thing that has me a little confused with Guacamelee is that the metroidvania elements of the game are almost more suited for genre newcomers, but the platforming sections have some real challenge to them at times almost making it a little less approachable for newbies. That being said Guacamelee absolutely respects your time, as it took me about five hours to beat, and has more content I never dove into - not to mention you can play it co-op.
