How is this game compared to Skyrim?
I have the old version, but never had the motivation to try it, not even with mods... but with the remaster available, now I want to try it. But... how is this compared to Skyrim?

It has Survival mechanics, like thirst and hunger? Can you have your own home base? Can you steal and get arrested, spend time in jail? Your choices have real impact in the world and storyline? Magic is cool, with fun spells?

Wait until you see a REAL Dark Brotherhood quest series. REAL faction quests that aren't done in 2 minutes with you suddenly leading the guilds.

Skyrim did have its moments but it was such a rush-job with the factions.

I'm a bit mixed on it... it's like a really, really good graphical overhaul mod for the original game as well as some quality of life gameplay fixes like sprinting. They changed the way leveling works a bit as you can now freely distribute points into three attributes instead of it being set based on the skills that were leveled.

There are no survival mechanics implemented as far as I can tell. There are the same properties that you can buy from the original game. You can steal, get arrested, spend time in jail as you could in the original game. Your choices, as far as quests go, can have impact to the world, but nothing overly dramatic. Ultimately the story is fairly on-rails as there is really only one ending to the main questline. Magic is the same as the original game, which is to say, a bit dated compared to Skyrim. You still have the ability to make custom spells, I believe, in the late game.

I would say, if you haven't played the original, the improvements are enough to make this a fun, modern experience.

Huh? Did you even play the DB quest in SK? Thieves' guild was great too. There was no fighters' guild, just the wolves. The only meh guild quest really was the mages' guild.

Skyrim is still way better

World seem empty just like the original.

Voice, they adding new voice actings.

Balance, terrible. I though they would have rebalance this. 20 second for bound weapon or armor is just not worth it. Same for summoning creature too.

If I could play a Skyrim remaster without having to deal with Gamebryo/Creation Engine, I would play that over this.

They were good quests, but you can practically hear the members saying "look! our next guildmaster!" the minute you walk in. Oblivion has way longer quest chains. I'd wager that the final Thieves Guild quest in Oblivion is about a 1/4th as long as any of the entire Skyrim guild questlines.
I like Oblivion more than Skyrim, but they are both great games. Oblivion's magic system is much deeper than Skyrim's, but also harder to master. Yes, you can get a base of sorts, but it's nothing like Hearthfire unfortunately. Yes, you can steal and be arrested. There is no in-built Survival mode, no, and I'd make an argument that it actually doesn't need it. The game takes place in Cyrodiil, the heartland of the Empire, it's a civilized place with many towns, churches, shops, castles, craftsmens guilds, farms. The land is extremely fertile and the climate is extremely agreeable. You do need to sleep in order to level up though. lol

Skyrim and Oblivion are similar in gameplay, but very different in player character building. Skyrim is fluid, while Oblivion is closer to classic fantasy gaming with attributes and classes. But Skyrim falls hard in writing and quests. Oblivion's writing is multitudes better than what Skyrim ever got.

OG Oblivion and Remaster have some very nuanced, but impactful, differences in gameplay. Many of the changes in the Remaster are the additoin of QoL features, like the color-coding being added to the speechcraft minigame. The worldbuilding and quests appear to be greatly unchanged.

You'll only get survival mechanics with mods.
You can buy a house in almost every city.
You can steal items and get thrown in jail.
There is only one ending. Your choices don't have any impact on the story in any Elder Scrolls game. Your only real choice is how you play the game.
How does it compare to Skyrim?

Oblivion is far superior. The only thing Skyrim had on it was "it's newer and more shiny" and this remaster solves that.
skyrim better. They didnt really change all that much other than make the game less fugly, it's 100% still oblivion so the innovations they made from oblivion to skyrim are still felt. That being said the writting is more engaging even if it is still extremely on rails like every bethesdaslop, has a lot more passion and whimsy in the writing.

I agree in spirit, but Oblivion dragged out the factions by having so many copy pasted jobs. Aren't there like 4 "Kill Trolls" quests in the Fighters Guild? And the Arena may as well not even be a real faction it's so basic.

I am so tempted to buy this even though I own the original. It looks as if they have done a really good job on it, meaning that the game has retained it's original magic.
