help with removing forest land for farming
Anyone have a way how to remove the forest natural resource?....Got farming industry and for some reason forest took the land over (without actual trees being in the area at all) and half my farming cant produce now.

Got the natural resource painter in game but for some reason it cant paint over forest land.

Trees automatically add forest resource; more trees = more forrest resource.

There's a mod that helps control the behaviour of trees adding forest resource: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1637106958

I understand that the issue is fixed now though I found that shrubs or tiny bushes even one will cause a large difference on fertile land.
I was recovering a fertile area from forestry the other day. Actually it was generic at the time when I spotted it was all sitting on fertile land. I removed the zoned buildings and left the land pollution to dissipate or clear. Afterwards I noticed the fertile land was sparse no matter how heavy I painted it. So I moved thing like fire hall to reveal two trees and a shrub. Under the roads too were many trees. After zooming in tight to find the smallest of plants and remove them. I was finally able to paint a rich area of fertile ground. Another area had a dusting of oil on the fertile area and could not be seen by me, but when I used the painter to remove oil the colour sprang back. The take away is we often forget that there are trees sitting beneath many things in this game and sometimes that makes a huge difference.

So, I know it's been a while, but I seem to have the same problem as you! After having carefully and manually deleted every tree in an area, I proceeded to try and paint it with fertile soil using Extra Landscaping Tools. I was mostly successful, but for a couple of patches, which wouldn't turn yellow no matter what. I could swear I bulldozed every little shrub in the area, but since I've been wrong before, I tried erasing the residual forestry resource using Extra Landscaping Tools own tree brush - to no avail. Then I tried selecting trees with the Move It marquee tool - also no result.

Do you still remember what exactly you did to get rid of the forestry natural resource? There are other patches around my city which retained the forestry resource even after trees were deleted...

Are you using generic or DLC?
bmig Nov 22, 2020 @ 10:03pm
Well, I'm actually plopping down specialized agriculture extractors from the vanilla game in the area using Find It 2.

Well there you go then. ...The DLC will eliminate those issues. But it's always your choice.

I have found that to get rid of forestry areas wholesale is to use MoveIt and the marquee tool to highlight the area and use the MoveIt bulldozer to get rid of both trees and bushes, before I place any roads, so if I need to, I can paint a fertile grounds area suitable for farming with no issues. Once I get rid of the trees and bushes, it is easier to see what might need a bit of enhancement.

I do realize that the DLC would allow me to place agriculture extractors at will. However, this is just part of the problem – in fact, since I'm using Find It 2, this is no problem at all. The mod easily allows me to browse through vanilla's own specialized extractors and plop them down in accordingly specialized zoned areas.
The real issue at hand here is I can't paint some spots of land with the fertile soil tool in Extra Landscaping Tools. After doing some research about, it seems the fertile soil tool can't applied to areas with the forestry natural resource. In theory, the this resource (forestry) should be linked to trees (plant them, and there you have it; bulldoze them, and it's gone). But then I noticed using the natural resources overlay that there are several patches of green forestry resource in areas where the trees were removed throughout the entire city! And these green tree-less spots are the areas I can't paint with fertile soil brush.

@WhiteKnight77
I definitely agree that Move It makes it super convenient to remove trees – it may even remove trees hidden under assets (buildings, and such). But as I mentioned, I tried using it, and it did get rid of the trees, but the green forestry ground resource (visible from the natural resources overlay) remains. It's a confounding mistery!

Btw, I may provide screenshots, if you find it a good idea!

It sounds like a mod issue. Maybe post a saved game and we can look at it. I and many others don't have this issue, so I'm sure it's a mod offsetting it some how. If you zoom out do your other resources do this? or can you see a new fertile area or abnormal fertile area that looks created?

@ bmig;

My point is that I use The DLC only and in using it I have on several occasions managed to paint the fertile soil over forestry, ore and oil areas. In the instances where I placed farming assets in wooded areas the field, fruit trees, pasture or building simply replaced the trees. No dozer work required. Doing it the way you are is fine if that is what you choose. Just pointing out ( and only because you asked in op ) that it is not totally necessary.

If you prefer not to use the DLC then ...Yippe-Ci-Oh ! It's your game, your choice, and there's no way you can play your game the wrong way.

@MarkJohnson

Thank you so much for offering to check my save file. I'm currently running:
Find It 2
Harmony 2.0.1
Extra Landscaping Tools
TM:PE V11 STABLE (Traffic Manager: President Edition)

And FYI, I'm not using any DLCs (except for the Deluxe Edition Upgrade Pack, Soundtrack and The Architecture Artbook) – the simple reason is I planned the entire city long before I bought any of them. I know, I do realize I'm quite the control freak – I have pretty much the entire 9 tiles planned in a spreadsheet in Excel!

As for the save file, I hope WeTransfer is convenient ('m sorry, I just don't know any embedded Steam feature that would provide an easier sharing option):

The patch I have been unable to paint with the fertile soil brush is right in the middle of a bunch of extractors in the Underhill Hill district (top north of the city). But you may see patches of green forestry resource using the natural resources overlay in several areas in town, though there do not seem to be any trees in sight.

Boy oh boy, do I feel pretty helpless now, lol. I couldn't for the life of me imagine you could place the DLC's agriculture extractors in areas without fertile soil – honestly, I assumed they would just not work.

I may have to redesign my plans – more spreadsheet work lol. The only reason I was avoiding the Industries DLC is that their extractors look way too big for the current layout I had in mind. But there's a caveat: the DLC added storage facilities to the game, which make balancing industrial supply chain way more feasible. As mentioned, I'll seriously consider your advice!
