Why do I suddenly die at random?
So, I'll be walking along, exploring in single player. Suddenly I take damage - and lots of it. There's been no sound, nothing to indicate enemies, my minimap is clear and I can't see any zombies anywhere. I only take damage when I'm moving, but when I do, I lose about a third of my health with each step.

I thought at first I'd stepped into some weird irradiated biome, but it's not just happening when I go from one biome to another anymore - it just seems to be happening at random. It's making the game completely unplayable because it doesn't matter what I do or build or anything, death just comes knocking out of nowhere.

Does anyone know what's happening? Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a problem, or am I just missing something, like a special landmine-biome that's made of explosives?

Thanks in advance, any help is appreciated!

Zombie cop spitting at you from long distance can do it. Or walking through a radiated zone will kill you quickly too.

Yeah try pressing M and checking map, the area around the edges is a death zone, its green with lots of car frames and cinderblocks. Else it has to be police zombie. There are military camps with mines, but you'd probably tell since there is an explosion.

Status condition? Bleeding or Infected?

Military camp? Where? I've found some places with barbed wire... but not mines.

Have you been forgetting to eat? I do that, a lot.

I'm not sure what it was, but it seems to have resolved itself. I'm thinking I was probably hitting the edge of the map, it seems likely - thanks for the help, guys! Much appreciated!

Invisible Ninja Zombie Bunny

Fun Pimps promised us they would never put it in the game...

They lied.

...

Or you're walking off the edge of the map and getting radiation poisoning.

I just had this happen to me. Was getting attacked by a horde, hiding in a wood shed, opened the door and closed it quick to let one in to fight it and as soon as I killed it I died. It hit me 2 times and had lots of health left but we both died.

I've had that happen, it's really frustrating when it happens. I've also had it kill me when I respawn near my bed for no reason.

This happened to me as well, twice! It's very annoying, considering I just bought the game an hour ago and I'm already down to 80 health and stamina. I'll give as many details as I can remember, as well as any theories I have. I was using the default map, "Navezgame" or something like that. Given that this game is notoriously buggy, it could be just that. But this thread is from a few updates ago; I think it'd be patched by now if that was the case.

There was a quest to complete. Considering it looked like a tutorial, I'm wondering if maybe it wants me to complete it before moving too far from spawn? I'm psyched that they're pioneering questing in a survival/horror-crafting/building game, but you'd think it'd be best to focus on looting food and water, as well as arming yourself right off the bat, while the quest focuses on making tools/clothes, THEN weapons.

I spawned in a snow biome next to a house, looted it, walked like 50 meters away toward a grass biome that I saw on the map, and out of nowhere I started losing 1/3 of my health every second until I died.

I kept a very close eye on my temperature, which was surprisingly balmy at 69 F. I hadn't encountered a single zombie, so I know I wasn't bleeding or infected. I was caught totally off guard, so I had no time to react. I didn't look behind me, because I didn't hear footsteps, moaning/growling, or swinging/biting I thought maybe I'd walked across some barbed wire so I looked at the ground. I quickly ascertained that nothing was there except some cosmetic trash.

The second time it was nearly nightfall, so I went inside a house and hunkered down. Around 3:00 I ate and drank until full. I left the house at 4:00, and managed to walk 100 meters this time before dying exactly the same way as before. This time, I tried applying a first aid bandage to no avail. Shortly before dying, I passed a road sign that said something along the lines of "Arizona 100 mi, Nevada 200 mi, etc", so I doubt I walked across the map's edge.

In both instances, it happened while transitioning from one biome to another. First from snow to grass, then from desert to I'm-not-sure-what (it was mostly dead grass with trees that were half-leafy, half-dead. I didn't enter the biome all the way before dying). Considering how deep they're trying to go in terms of realism, I wonder if it's from changing biomes too quickly? Just a shot in the dark since irl, it is life-threatening to go from one temperature extreme to another too rapidly, but it's nearly impossible to do this if you're on foot, outdoors, and dry.

You walked to the map border thats why. need to look at the map, it will show green where the radiation zones are. It's not anything to do with changing biomes or temperature extremes.

Ah. So I'm guessing it's not out of the ordinary to spawn right at the map's edge. I'm finding there's quite a learning curve to this game XD after a case of food poisoning, I'm now down to 75 health & stamina... Woulda been 90 if it weren't for two very needless deaths I=(

Anyway, third spawn ended up being the charm. Thanks Brian!

This is a very old thread, and the game has changed so much that old advice on the issue is likely no longer relevant. Please start a new thread to discuss the issue you're having.
