Mine under surface nodes. How far a vein goes is uncertain.
You can of course just dig around at random a la minecraft, but, you'll basically just be finding veins that are marked by a surface node. I guess given that most/all nodes begin from the surface, that being near the surface is the best place to tunnel around? Kinda?
There are ore pockets scattered all over under ground that are not linked to surface nodes
I am doing two games right now at same time one solo one co op with friends and each base only had one iron node on the surface nearby but i just went under ground and dug a tunnel in all 4 directions and in about 50-100 blocks i found hidden under ground ore pockets
its always more often iron then either coal or nitrate then least found is lead.
