Noob question--how to get health back
I'm trying to get through my first few nights. I was wondering how to get health back. I ate a can of chili, but i don't think my health was restored much? I don't think iwas hungry or thirsty. I'm talking health for very early game--thanks.

you can craft bandages from cloth, you can also find honey in tree stumps !very importan! sincec honey can also heal infection. From certain food you can get health back.

i tried to use the bandages, but it said that "item couldnt be used". Which foods give me health back? Not chili?

EVERY food gives you back a little health. In early game your best bet would be Bacon & Eggs, as soon as you put one point into the Master Chef skill.

Justix may be working off of outdated information. You should first check for any debuff effects in the lower left corner of the HUD. You can click on one of these debuffs for a description, including how to remedy the debuff, if possible.

Debuffs will lower your max health. You want to take care of your max health first. Otherwise you can waste healing items trying to heal past your max, which doesn't work.

You can craft bandages, but those dont give health. In order to make it give health, you need Physician skill and then aloe from the desert, which you turn into aloe cream and then with a bandage, you combine cream and bandage for a first aid kit which heals.

Standard "Bandage" is only used to stop bleeding. Your screen will be all gushing blood and you will have a heart with an arrow through it over your health bar.....thats bleeding and bleeding sucks.
There is also a perk to invest your skill points into... that will help (slowly at first) your heath rise.
Times always ticking... so if your low on food and bandages, having your heath slowly full up can be a valuable asset.
Later levels will heal you quite quickly.

I actually spend all my first 4 points into this.

Healing Factor only works when you are not starving, and when it does work, it uses your food level at a faster rate than normal. Not really a good choice if you are low on food. I think a better use of points would be towards cooking. There are foods you can make at higher levels that give a lot of health. In the beginning, I think it's a good idea to buy them at the trader if you can find them and keep them for emergencies.

If you're in the desert, you can craft Aloe into Aloe Cream (potentially into First Aid Bandages if you have cloth, but only if you've quickly perked into Physician). Noteable foods for lots of health (these give more (double) Health than food value, which isn't common) are Boiled Meat (easy in early game), Fish Tacos, and Sham Chowder. Pain Killers are pretty common and effective for healing, but they make you thirsty. Generally, I'd agree that food is the way to go for healing.

1 Fast Metabolism You must have a fast metabolism. Gain 1 HP every 90 seconds with natural healing. Critical injuries heal 20% faster.
2 Quick Healer You seem to be a quick healer. Gain 1 HP every 45 seconds with natural healing. Critical injuries heal 40% faster.
3 Animal What are you part animal? Gain 1 HP every 20 seconds with natural healing. Critical injuries heal 60% faster.
4 Regeneration You seem to just regenerate health super fast. Gain 1 HP every 10 seconds with natural healing. Critical injuries heal 80% faster.
5 Mutant Genes You must have mutant genes from all the radiation. Gain 1 HP every 6 seconds with natural healing. Critical injuries heal twice as fast.

Yes, it is a nice perk if you have food. You missed the part where it says

"Specialize in boosting your natural healing rates as long as you're not starving. Self-healing will not work when you are out of food or water."

If your status is hungry or thirsty, the perk doesn't work.
Yeah.... you missed the part where OP says hes not staving or thirsty. ;)

Yeah... you missed the part where OP says very early game. You're not going to have level 5 healing factor until probably mid game or later. OP may not have been hungry or thirsty at the time he/she ate the chili, but is likely to be hungry or thirsty a lot early game, especially when a new player. The question was basically, 'a can of chili didn't seem to do anything, how do I increase health early game'.
