Yes, you should place it standing outside. That way the door will roll up and away from you.

I tried it in creative first, before installing in my real game. :2018salienpsychic:

Can confirm when placing garage door you are looking at the outside of the door.

I really do wish there were better indicators for placing things with the right orientation... same goes for iron hatches snd a few other things.

Agreed. How about a color indicator where the "hinge" is. Or have them placed in the OPEN state. So we can see...

Wanted to place a rolling door, wasn't sure in which directions it opens, searched the internet, landed here, placed the door like described here and realized, it's exactly the opposite. (A20)

Placed the door from inside- Opens to wrong way
Break it and craft new one
Place the door from outside- Opens to wrong way

Problem is, you can rotate the item before placing. So, say you have a door, you rotate it to open opposite direction from default. Now, you place that and select a garage door to place next. It may not be in the default orientation at that point. It should be but, is it? This maybe a bad example but, sometimes rotating one item then placing it, will set the orientation for the next item you want to place.....if it is a like item and put in same inventory slot as last item. I don't believe it's supposed to do this but, I've experienced it happening....not sure if it was a setting at the time I may have had or what.

What makes you believe that? There is no any indication which way you place rolling up door, I have been actively playing latest update A20.4 and I have not seen any green arrows on doors or hatches.

Just to be aware: roll up doors and garage doors are different things.

For the roll up doors the facing doesn't really matter. They roll straight up.

Garage doors are the ones that end up a 90 degrees to their closed position and you have to get the right way round or they'll look wrong.

I haven't used garage doors in the last couple of minor builds, so I'm not sure if arrows have been added or not, but if they have you'll only see them on garage doors. They wouldn't mean anything on other door types.

You know, thinking about this there’s a fix that would work for all problem cases - small doors, big doors, swinging doors, rolling doors, hatches, drawbridges, etc. The problem comes from blocks with an animation. Solution: instead of the ghostly outline before you place the block being static, it plays the animation of it opening or closing, on a loop. No colored arrows or other new art assets required.

That would be great! It could also work if they switched to showing the open door instead of the closed door. That wouldn't show the full range or look as cool but might be an easier change.
