My friends and I are playing on an A18 server and are eagerly awaiting 19, but don't want to start an experiemental play through and then need to restart again on release. Do we have any idea when a stableish build will be released? OR, if we did play experiemental, could we transfer our progress to stable?
Thanks
That said, continuing a save through multiple experimental/stable versions does come with an inherent risk of oddities, like items suddenly losing all their durability, or turning into garbage items because of ID changes (usually in this case the garbage can be 'crafted' back into whatever it's meant to be), and stuff like that.
If you don't mind the occasional oddity from version changes, you'll likely be fine to just play the experimental and continue on stable.
It's not guaranteed, but it almost always works fine.
A19 has had problems when host/clients are on different versions of A19 though. There has already been a small update from A19exp-b152 (154?, maybe) to A19exp-b157, and server/client mismatches between versions has caused things like invisible crawler zombies and might also cause glitched/ghost blocks, console error popups and missing traders....so you'll need to make sure your server is kept up-to-date with the new releases.
It may also be a good idea to encourage your host+players to perform a clean install of A19 which includes manually deleting any old game files, maps and mod files (even uninstalled mods). Practically every major/game-breaking problem on A19 so far has been caused by a player having old game or mod data left behind and it causing issues.
I don't mean to scare you away from the update, because I didn't have any problems even with a plain update from a18.4 to A19exp...just needed to make new maps/saves because A18 ones wouldn't work, obviously. But a clean install is a better guarantee that everything will work seamlessly. I eventually performed the cleanup steps listed in the stickied bug/crash report section, and the whole process only took a minute or two...not bad at all, though folks who used mods in the past will also want to get rid of their mods folders like mentioned earlier.
Have we not gone through so many Alphas that it can't be tested and released in a stable version? This is a fair and honest question.
Please leave any updates you can possibly make below. Many thanks.
It doesn’t matter how many alphas we’ve gone through at this point, because each alpha introduces major new features and, unfortunately, with that comes new bugs. Yes it can be tested and released in a stable version, but that testing phase is happening right now.
