Fist build question
Hey folks,

I'm trying out a fists build for the first time and had a quick question.

What type of armor is best to use with fists (light, medium, heavy)?

I like light armor to be able to sneak but it's feeling a little flimsy meleeing up close and personal. The combination of movement and staggers works pretty well but it feels like some heavier armor may be necessary for when it doesn't. Maybe the stun/stagger/dismember combo gets better at higher levels. Could also just be operator error on my part.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I also like light armor, but the idea is, the heavy armor is more fitting for a fist build, as it's in the same perk tree and that you are probably going to be in melee most of the time, so you need good armor.

There are mods that can lessen the noise and movement penalties a bit with heavy armor, too.

i would say the heavy armor.
there is a perk that will remove all malus on movement (with heavy armor).
(idk if) it is (another perk OR) the armor that removes to get stunned and bleedings.

This also reminds me about a question I have had for a long time now, concerning armor and noise from sneaking, that you also mention in the OP.

The "from the shadows" perk says that "noises from actions are muffled". What actions are included in that ? I have to assume they mean movement from armor, but I don't know for sure.

And what about mining ? It seems silly to think that perk would also reduce the noise you make while mining, but mining is an "action" too, right ?

I just wonder what is included in "actions that are muffled". Far as I know, there is no list of those that is all inclusive.

thats really a little bit confusing.
i can shoot with guns and the next sleeper wont wake up.
the unlootable garbage on the ground that makes some noise seems to wake them up.
spawning screamers, while mining, is heatmap - not noise - i think.

Not just talking about screamers, though. The noise meter goes up while you are mining and doing other "actions" in the game, stepping on trash being one also. I am just saying that "noise from actions being muffled" does not tell me what actions they are talking about, and here we are specifically focused on talking about armor and movement while sneaking and the noise that makes, where OP also mentions that above.

But you are right, in that it is a bit confusing.
You're gonna want Heavy Armor.

And these are good too:

Beer, Grandpa's Moonshine, Fort Bites, Steel Knuckles, Sexual Tyrannosaurus Perk, Master Chef Perk, Attribute: Fortitude, The Brawler Perk, Heavy Armor Perk, Pain Tolerance Perk, Healing Factor Perk, Rule 1: Cardio Perk, Iron Gut Perk, Deep Cuts Perk (might work on steel Knucles), Parkour Perk, Physician Perk, Charismatic Nature (only if you're in multiplayer with other people), 1-7 Hunter's Journal Books, 5-7 Urban Combat Books. And throw some good mods into your weapons/armor.

Oh and depending on which difficulty you're playing on some of these perks/equipment may not even be needed to feel "op."

I’m doing a mainline Fists run at the moment, and heavy armour is definitely the way to go - you will wake enemies up, so go loud, wake them up, and punch them down while they line up for you. Great fun! Also, to go light armour requires you to spend points in Agility, when you want to be buffing your Endurance first and foremost.

With full steel armour (lvl 5 if you craft, 6 if you’re lucky with loot), and +2 banded armour mods, and lvl4-5 pain tolerance, you’ll basically be taking 1-2 points of damage from ordinary zombies, which you heal almost instantly. Move in and out like a boxer, and backpedal (always keep an eye on your exits), and you can kill any number of ordinary zombies, and can control 2-3 ferals/rads with ease. Remember to use doorways to control the numbers you are facing, and left click for fast attacks to control/knock down enemies, right click to do more damage as you can, and especially if you definitely have a head shot lined up.

On that note, use weighted head for more knockdowns, as that’s your primary means of crowd control, along with beer.

If you’re about to enter a room you know or suspect will be a big fight, chug a beer, and down a coffee. Iron Guts help with these bonuses, and if you eventually learn to make blackstrap coffee or Yucca Smoothies, you can basically have a constant +25% stamina regen.

One thing to note however is that you’ll very likely hit a wall when Demo zombies come along - melee horde bases are absolutely viable, but demos will just blow up in your face way too easily, by your hand or due to another zombie punching hitting him, unless you make a cheese base late game. For a melee base, make a raised corridor, one space wide two high, with a number of hatches on the ground, which open towards the entrance. Open two hatches, and simply punch zombies over them (you can just reach), if they break a hatch, Simply step back, open another one, and continue, but if you reinforce the hatches, and repair them as you’re able, you should be able to hold the, at 1-2 hatches. Put a few junk turrets with ammo on top to kill vultures, and you’re golden. Only problem is spider zombies can be a bit tricky to hit, but you can hit their heads as they glitch through the hatches if you time it well, or close a hatch, and simply punch over the top. Lots of beer helps.
