Right click on the chest/box with a stone axe to repair it, you will need wood or metal depending on the type on container.
Yeah. It seems likely that OP's friend or another player broke into the chest, took the gas cans, and replaced it with a locked chest of their own. Incidentally, it's easy to tie up your stuff where friends can't get it in a coop game, since chests are locked by default when you place them.
If you were sharing items with your friend and he needed the gas but you were not there to open the chest, it could be that he broke the lock to get to it. But, that would not have jammed the chest. He would have had to place a new chest making himself the owner for it to show jammed to you. You should certainly have a talk.
Thank you both for clearing that up. I never knew the cause of the "jammed" chest.
