Can you be a little more clear on what is popping up saying you can't? A screenshot would help a lot.
You may be trying to play a saved game from version x while version y is installed, which won’t work. Start a new game under that version if you don’t have any. If that’s not the problem, please clarify “some thing popping up saying you can’t.”
My particular use case - I'd like to play an old save which is based on A19 on my own, but I'd like to play A21 with Darkness Falls mod with a friend. But please keep the answer generic for those people reading this post years from now.
From there, launch the game from the .exe within the folder itself (or create a custom shortcut) , not the Steam launcher. Reinstall a 2nd time through Steam, and switch back to the current version and boom. Two separate installs, two different Alphas.
There are some who have multiple installs done in a similar fashion.
Would probably have to ask the respective mod authors themselves if the two can be integrated.
