Well ok, yeah there are.
If you've got the hardware and the reflexes Dying Light is really good.
Be advised that the expansion is a shameless driving simulator but the base game is very good.
Crafting system is pretty much "mash two things together and use the result".
No building at all and no base defense other staying near safe houses during night.
After you level a bit you can go out and fight in the streets even against that games version of a Feral.
(i really should use this as a review at some point...)
I played it once and found that weapons broke REALLY easily - like after killing 3 zombies.
Am I playing it wrong?
Like Ry3er said.
You don't really craft but you find/buy better quality stuff, get perks that increase your damage, etc. so you can stretch how long your gear lasts.
You loot so much stuff that eventually it stops being an issue.
Miscreated
Sanctum 2
Thanks! I saw this. Looks like FPS tower defence which is great, but no world to explore; no survival features; no crafting; no building sandbox (aside from traps turrets); but it does have skill trees. I'll put it down as a maybe.
Someone also PM'd me and mentioned Unturned which looks like fun (and also free), with the ability to host private servers (albeit with great difficulty).
"maybe" Planet Explorers , it looks nice but i dont know how similar it its
and Empyrion galactic Survival ,its 7days2die but in space
This looks a lot like 7D2D except to play a private game over LAN you need to pay the devs a monthly fee to rent a server; no thanks. Also, more bugs than 7D2D and glitchy building.
Someone else recommended this to me via PM due to this thread but explained a few of the downsides.
Looks like a bog standard tower defence game with playable walls and turrets. Multiple lanes mix things up but again no world to explore, no survival or base building, judging by the videos it doesn't have any skills or perk trees.

How to Survive 2 seems like a good mix of zombies, crafting, base building, defence, levelling up,
etc (except it's top-down, not FPS).
That game looks breathtaking, but some of the reviews are humbling..

Well, one of the reviews.
This review alone sells it for me:
"I was playing at "7 days to die", then I saw the stars and I went to Empyrion.
This is the best survival crafting space game ever. If you can think it you can do it."

I went ahead and bought 2 copies of this, How to Survive 2 and Dying Light.
I would love if this was multiplayer (and if they didn't charge people again for the final patch).
This is true.
Still a bit cautious since they were so "thankful" for the Early Access backers and promised them all future updates, then turned around and made them pay for the final update.
