Meh,
First off, night time is no longer more threatening than day time BECAUSE there is no threat of wolves and bears. That being said, no one wants to move. We are not spending, literally hours upon hours, grinding resources to build a base that we then move away from. You ever tried to move 87 chests worth of supplies? We gotta grind a bunch of resources again, build another base, build another farm, and then move everything we have across the map....to encounter a wolf?
Also, consider that by the time you are ready to "graduate" the wolves and bears, are at best, meat stew. I can't even consider them that, since I will already have 100 stacks of food via the deer smacking into my fence, all day, everyday.
Really, if you want a better challenge, you need to create a map that doesn't have a forest biome, or spawn and run around all day until you find a tougher biome.
My wife, who is 60...a 60 yr old woman...just started playing last week, and as funny as it is to watch her get mad, and have to consistently give her pep talks, even she wonders why there is chickens everywhere, like ♥♥♥♥ roaches, and no other animals. It goes from hanging out at base (way to boring/nothing going on), to running into town and dying.
So, from a vets perspective, I have to agree, the forest biome is a total joke now. And from my wifes absolute newb status as a gamer, much less this game, the forest biome is boring.
Let's be real.
Snow biome/scavenger setting....this is not the intention of the devs. This is a mistake by the devs.
Exactly.
That being said, she has the same complaints i do, but for different reasons, on many issues. This is the biggest one, right here. This post is just perfect, considering what I just dealt with. She thinks this awesome game is totally stupid. It goes from super easy and boring in that forest biome start, to totally insanely hard in the poi's. No in-between.
The wolves and bears were the in between !!!!!
(wolves, bears, boars, chickens, rabbits, deer, and now snakes) would give a better feel, while providing something to fight, early on. Leaving only the fast running, agile, hard to hit, small targets is frustrating.
She is running around in the forest, LOOKING for a fight, trying to get a handle on how to fight..some practice, and can't find a damned thing. She is chasing down chickens, who juke like line backers did back in madden, and getting totally frustrated. "the f-ing grass!." She wont even bother with rabbits anymore. She will unload 50 arrows trying to hit one, its kinda funny. Then shes mad that she has to run around for an hour, finding more bird nests. BORING.
"I gotta chop down all these trees?" BORING
"I gotta hammer on this rock?" BORING
"I gotta chase this stupid chicken?" BORING
"I thought this was a zombie game, where are the zombies?" BORING
ok, ok, go into that house, baby.
"WTF, there is 10 of them and I can't even block, or push them away." DEAD
"WTF, I moved back, and he still hit me!" DEAD
"WTF, the floor collapsed!" DEAD
"I'm starving." DEAD
"Why cant I swing my weapon?" (no stamina) DEAD
"I'm thirsty" DEAD
ok, back to the forest.
"Is there any other animals? Are chickens suppose to be like roaches are in a nuclear apocalypse?" "This is stupid, where are the other animals?" "Is this a chicken hunting game?" BORING
"oh, look its a deer!" Fires an arrow, hits! (deer runs away, she chases) "Why isnt it dead, i hit it with an arrow?" STUPID (this is at night, with a total newb, btw...where is this threat?)
ut oh...we are now on a hunting trip. Shes elated, she saw a deer...
2 hours later...
"What kind of forest is totally devoid of any animal life?" BORING
"There are no fish?" BORING
"There are no birds?" BORING
ok, let me make a new map. (snow biome)
"Why the frack did you start me in that stupid forest?"
I thought it would be easier to learn.
"No, it was stupid and boring"
"So, the zombies don't come to the snow? Is that why the animals are here?"
Lumberjack (DEAD)
"frack this stupid game."
sigh...
There is no in-between now. The forest needs to have animals in it...or at least, more zombies. The newbie player needs a chance to practice using their controller in combat before getting put into a close quarter, trapped, poi. The veteran player needs some sort of distraction, or excitement when they are base building, outside.
Understand, its to tempting for a new player to wander around the streets downtown (looking for stragglers to fight). They WILL go into the poi's. So, it jumps from to easy and boring to overwhelming.
Which begs the question, where's the balance? It's not fair to ask the devs to cater to your own personal wants and needs while disregarding other players.
OOOOOHHHHH that's gotta go on the valentines day card!
We went from to many, constantly, to none.
A slider to increase or decrease animal spawns might solve the issue.
An increase in animal spawns via an increase in difficulty level might solve the issue.
Taking them completely out of the game...not helping. Boars are literally asleep, everywhere. You can walk up to a boar, sneak, power attack with a bone shiv for a kill shot on lower difficulties. Why not just hang boar meat on tripods, for looting?
Edit: yaknow, we have this small, hard to hit game (rabbits, chickens, snakes) which is frustrating to hit for a newb, and then we have this perilous, large game (bears, dire wolves, lions, "awake" boars) which are stronger than the zombies at low to mid level.
Perhaps adding in some medium game, to the forest, would increase immersion, and present targets that are not to frustrating to hunt, or to hard to fight.
Large, easy to hit Turkeys. Not to fast when running off, low hp, die quickly.
Raccoons. Slower than chickens, dont juke all over the place, a little larger, not constantly blocked by grass. Sometimes aggressive, fight back, do small dmg, attack slowly.
Armadillo. Slow moving, easy to hit, armored, take alot of hits. (thats good practice right there)
Bobcats, aggressive, smaller than lions, less hp, dont hit as hard
Moose. Sometimes aggressive, but slow moving and can be dodged, lots of hp (more good practice)
Then make the bears, dire wolves, and packs of wolves present, but rare during the day, and uncommon at night.
haha, nope. She gets,
"She is smarter than I am, well motivated, and a fast learner."
Trust me, I ...um, went through this already...
they should add more better ones. and more foraging
I agree with foraging. Finding mushrooms, potatoes, and such around the forest would be immersive and help newbs stay out of town for a few days. I like that some of the poi's now have a mushroom or 3 scattered about, but it would be better if they were scattered in the forest. This would alos make ponds, lakes and rivers more important, as they would become drinking sources. This would compliment the dew collectors better (increasing tech, rather than water spamming, at first)
This way a newb can build up in the forest, and slowly enters the towns, starting in the outskirts and working their way into the urban areas. Especially if we had more versatile game to hunt and fight, as I mentioned above. I agree with you there too.
Better forest animals, and foraging would also promote base and farm building, leaving scavenging, salvaging, and then mission spam for mid game.
It would actually make magazine hunting better too. You would start off living primitively, and slowly move into pois for knowledge and technology, where the zombies are. It would make wilderness poi's more important as well. I bet a few would become popular boarded up bases.
Sadly though, this would move the game back into a survival game, and it seems they want a looter shooter now=(
Although, imho this would just give a choice.
Moving up to a more difficult biome certainly adds a challenge, but it doesn't add the tension of a random threat because I know exactly what I will face, plus it comes with additional environmental hazards.
I like the idea that my first few days could be easy, or they could be really tough, without having to decide beforehand the type of experience I want.
That being said, I suppose I could just add bears & wolves back into the biome spawn list.
I've yet to see a Bear or Wolf during nightime in Pine Forest.
They only seem to spawn in the Snow biome during night.
