The "best" thing to do is try out all versions starting with A10 and see which one you like best.
Problem with old versions, while they may have 'better' mechanics for some things in some ppl's op's, is the graphics and UI controls weren't AS good it is in newer versions. Those got progressively better with each new version. For example, I REALLY liked the game mechanics back in A16.4 but, I didn't realize (till I reverted to playing it again) how much better controls and graphics are now. So, now I can't even force myself to play the OLD versions anymore. What's better is... get mods that change them game mechanics in the new(er) version(s) to be similar with older versions. That's the best solution imo cuz, you kind of get the best of both worlds.
Exactly what I think too. After playing the late versions, it's quite impossible for me to go back for a few things I liked while losing way too many new features I enjoy. I much prefer the late version with modding when I want than going back.
i liked alfa 10 funny enough. simpler times.
i remember one time i had this super epic play, default settings vanilla game a10, and i made a home in this wreck of a multistory medium sized brick building in the center of the city and at night the zambiis would come and try to break down my wooden walls so during the day i would repair them and i kept gathering items into that location.. it was an amazing experience and it was all mindless zams, not like now where they think and path towards me in a smart way.. :) ya just dont get play like that anymore, especially since now in a22 or whatever the zams only spawn in certain chosen spots.. zombies used to spawn right behind where i stood in a10 :)
a thing to note, in a10 when the zombies would spawn, if you were in the city wreck it was endless spawning and huge crowds would form.. im glad i still have a copy of a10 in a standalone file to play sometimes :) the city wreck they now call the wasteland
You have to remember the game is highly modable. You can shape the game any which way you choose.
