Best game version?
What game version was the best? With the new, god awful changes I'm hoping to refind the fun this game used to have by going back but don't remember which versions had what changes. So, what version(s) would people recommend?

16.4 is the common answer here, but the reality is, there is no "best version". It's all personal preference.

The "best" thing to do is try out all versions starting with A10 and see which one you like best.
This...^....
Problem with old versions, while they may have 'better' mechanics for some things in some ppl's op's, is the graphics and UI controls weren't AS good it is in newer versions. Those got progressively better with each new version. For example, I REALLY liked the game mechanics back in A16.4 but, I didn't realize (till I reverted to playing it again) how much better controls and graphics are now. So, now I can't even force myself to play the OLD versions anymore. What's better is... get mods that change them game mechanics in the new(er) version(s) to be similar with older versions. That's the best solution imo cuz, you kind of get the best of both worlds.

I really liked A18. I felt like the Trader missions gave me something to do when I didn't have a plan. I prefer to defeat Zs in melee, and A18 was the last alpha without the crit-injury system (in A18 repeated hits would mostly just reduce your max HP, which bandages would restore. There were still rare Sprains and Breaks). I enjoyed doing Horde back-to-back with a friend just beating stuff down with a lot of Moonshine (don't mix this with Beer though, you might lose the healing effect of Moonshine if you do).
Moving to General Discussions, because Questions & Answers is intended for knowledge base how-does-the-game-work type questions with objective answers.

Exactly what I think too. After playing the late versions, it's quite impossible for me to go back for a few things I liked while losing way too many new features I enjoy. I much prefer the late version with modding when I want than going back.
16.4 is definitly my favorite. Could be because I also started playing the game during this version, but it's the only version I often revisit in vanilla, . If I play on a more recent alpha, it's almost always because of mods/overhauls
A20 7 for Undead Legacy👍

Have to agree with the others, around 16 were the golden years of 7D2D.

i liked alfa 10 funny enough. simpler times.

i remember one time i had this super epic play, default settings vanilla game a10, and i made a home in this wreck of a multistory medium sized brick building in the center of the city and at night the zambiis would come and try to break down my wooden walls so during the day i would repair them and i kept gathering items into that location.. it was an amazing experience and it was all mindless zams, not like now where they think and path towards me in a smart way.. :) ya just dont get play like that anymore, especially since now in a22 or whatever the zams only spawn in certain chosen spots.. zombies used to spawn right behind where i stood in a10 :)

a thing to note, in a10 when the zombies would spawn, if you were in the city wreck it was endless spawning and huge crowds would form.. im glad i still have a copy of a10 in a standalone file to play sometimes :) the city wreck they now call the wasteland
For me its the early A6, minecraft like terrain, even though I dont play Minecraft or care about it. I really enjoyed those early version including the big bees. I also loved the crafting back then. Arranging items in order to craft something was the best.

A15 for me. It was tough but had its flaws, just like all iterations have

I always hate the latest version but then after a few hours of playing it I love it.
You have to remember the game is highly modable. You can shape the game any which way you choose.
