Wood log spikes. Lots and lots of it.
Build upward at least 4 blocks high. Make a super mario jump style way to get to your base - do not make it easy for the zombies. I.E.: build stairs, block in front of that, and stairs on top of that block (and higher of you have 4 or more blocks). This is your jump-off. Be sure that at least one block space is empty from stairs to your base. Place wood log spikes around your stairs and the empty space. Be ready to chop down the gore blocks as it builds up.
Oh, and bow arrows are your friend. Make lots and lots of arrows - have at least 50 by the time day 7 comes around.

Find a red 'Decayed Brick' building, break down the stairs and the bottom part of the ladder leading to the roof. Get up on the roof and stay there 'til morning. The building *should* be fine (as in not collapse) until then, it's one of the (if not THE) sturdiest prefabs in my experience. Come dawn, go out and kill'em for some XP.

Or, if you happen to be decent with a bow (or have better weapons even) and have coffee/beer/grain alcohol, just go kill them when they come. With a few of those drinks, you can keep running/kiting and killing the zeds as they come. Which is what I did in my current game, the first (7th) horde I dealt with only using the bow, a mining helmet will help with visibility though. I've actually gone outside to kill most of them myself in each horde so far, up to the 28th right now.

here is a 'hint' they like to run to your exact location. well what if that exact location moved....

spikes hurt if you keep running on them

If I’m not prepared for a feral horde. At 1130 PM I start walking random a random direction bring alcohol/coffee/beer. Once it hits 12 stop. Let the horde spawn in. then run, take the long way back to your base. You should be far enough away that by the time you get back the zombies can’t find you. You can also use these opportunity to get rid of any buildings you don't want. They make an excellent demolition crew. Whatever you decide just don't be at your base when it happens. They will overrun it and you will lose free access to your stuff until you deal with them. Also repairs can be a ♥♥♥♥♥

Okay guys, thanks for the tips so far, I guess I'll try it out. Will probably run. I'm on day 5 living on the roof of a pretty high prefab which seems like sort of a shop downstairs, and a living room upstairs. It isn't the biggest but atleast it's pretty safe for now. I'll stock up on alcohol and stuff and probably go running. If anyone got any other suggestions on literally everything, feel free to post

I reccomened staying nomadic until you can setlle down in an ideal as possible location. I usualy have not found the prefect spot by day 7 so run is a very viable tactic. Gives you time to get set up for day 14 and level more along the road, so ferrals are not as tough because you have better gear to deal with them.

Yeah but basically I gather all the supplies I can and they stock up really fast, so I usually get a base going before day 4-5

I know people say wood log spikes, but they are expensive early on, go for the regular wooden spikes first, you can make loads without needed tons of wood and they are very effective.

2late, used them for fuel.
almost on day 7 now, I've stocked up on antibiotics, painkillers, arrows and a bit of alcohol. I've placed wooden spikes and log spikes around my base and scattered them near it. It's been holding up really great to normal hordes, will probably move away and kite the day horde, and run from the night horde

the roof you're on is fine. just break the entrance door and cover it with frames, and break the lowest rung of the ladder, put another frame on top and this should keep any early horde at bay. also, make sure there aren't ladders outside leading to the roof. if so, break the bottom of those as well.
