Before we give up on this game

I have a problem with a 2 player game we have been playing for quite a while. Suddenly when i try to join i always get the null reference exception, object reference not set to an instance of an object. error,

From what i'm gathering it sounds like a corrupt save file, however the player hosting it seems to get in fine. We have tried everything we can find but so far nothing works.
Obviously we've been playing quite a while and would like to keep the game.

Anyone know how to fix this?

The null reference exception error is the equivalent of a check engine light: it doesn’t provide enough information for a diagnosis. Please see the pinned thread in the Bugs/Crash Reports section, where I’m moving this, for how to report an issue in a way that people can help.

Do you know exactly what the null reference exception is in referrence to? You can press F1 and look for red lines, this should tell you what ISNT loading correctly.

My friend is away for Christmas now so i can't check but i don't remember anything specific at all. Will have a loot when i can. Thanks for the help.
