The Idea of a Shove/Dodge Button
Hey guys, today I want to talk about the possibility of adding a dodge or a shove button in the game. I have played just a little bit of 7 Days myself and I can't help but wonder why something like this isn't implemented yet. This might be wishful thinking but hear me out a little more.

Can we have a Dodge button?
Something simple to add a little more depth to the Minecraft melee style gameplay. The typical hit-and-move-back combat, in my opinion, is very lackluster when dealing with zombies. It is purely based on your melee weapon damage, knockback, and if you decide to move backwards.

But hey, maybe some people prefer it to be that way.

What a dodge button would do can affect more than the PvE aspects but also what happens when a player meets another player with a melee weapon. Instead of being a simple 'Katana' beats 'Stick', both parties may dodge and manuever out of the other's reach to attack at the right moment. Obviously, a basic club would do less damage than a sledgehammer but it would be interesting to see some fights against odds like those.

The gunplay would be changed as well. Possibilities of peeking out of cover or mixing up your path to escape a hostile sniper puts an additional importance on aiming properly.

The Dodge skills could make use of the 'Athletics' going anywhere from increasing dodge distance or lower stamina costs or even how fast the dodge distance is covered in a shorter amount of time.

Can we have a Shove button?
A non-lethal or very low damage, quick attack that knocks back zombies at the cost of stamina. This might take a bit more work considering the animation could be different depending on the item you have (An unarmed shove would probably be different than a sniper rifle shove).

A mere knockback move to prevent getting hit by that one zombie in a fistfight or melee weapon. Against players, I think it should disorient another player's aim if they are close enough. One good camera jerk in a random direction would do the trick.

The Shove button would use the 'Athetlics' skill or the corresponding weapon skills themselves as the factor in determining stamina costs, damage, or how much the recipent character's camera moves as a result of the shove.

So what do you think? Is it a good idea to implement a Shove or a Dodge button? What changes would you make to the melee combat system? Go ahead and comment below! :D

A front kick would be easier to animate than a shove, I would think. Good idea, but I think the whole point of fighting Z's is to keep your distance, and dont get cornered. Making CQC with zombies easier could hurt the immersion of the game by making it more comfortable if and when they get too close. Just my two cents.

Didn't they already say they'd make it so you can shove with melee weapons? I could have swore that was one of the things they were going to add in.

shove/kick - I got one. I call it a shotgun. ;)

It could work if the stamina cost was large enough otherwise you would just be reckless and spam your dodge / shove constantly to get out of situations.

I see it as a last resort type ability therefore should deplete your stamina completely.

Very cool idea and probably isnt that hard to add into the game. It would add alot of more variety to melee combat as well. Hopefully the devs add it in a future update!

I wonder why we can't parry with melee weapons, it would make sence. Just deal damage to the durability of the weapon and your staming. Maybe even a random skill based roll to see if you still get hurt from a botched parry?

I understand worry about immersion breaking, but does common sense break immersion? I think its more immersion breaking we can't crawl under 1 block openings, though I understand why it was changed.

I just use a big blunt weapon to knock them around.

There is a way to dodge adding another button for that is redundant. It would be nice to be able to shove or push a zombie aside, though I don't see it happening for this game. Stick to Dying Light for that type of mechanic.

Wish they could add in a counter attack and make zombie combat more advanced so they could get rid of that ridiculous stun effect they are using now

Getting hit 1 time are many times equal to death if chased by a horde, so they could easy boost the zombie damage to be 1 hit kill without it had a big effect on your gameplay

Just a bit sick of that stun effect that most of times make you upset instead of thinking this was cool how that zombie managed to stun me, but this aint going to happen when all zombies are making the same effect every f...ing time!

So this is a small gamebreaker if you love combat/action "only screamers & ferals i like in this game all the other zombie types are just boring and too easy to fight.

Ps. when you know that you get stunned each time then you simply stop taking high risk, and at that point game becomes easy as f... (so i hope for something better)

Something else i want to complain a bit about :P
its very easy to make a fool proof zombie base in random gen if you find a terrain as this
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=629539945

Just begin to dig a hole into the mountain at ground level and when you gone 30+ blocks in you are safe & then you can block the entrance with iron bars at night and make a easy fool proof killing cave for the 7 day hordes (place the iron bars 4-5 blocks inside the cave) else zombies may try to hit on the rocks instead "when you want them to face you

Sorry if bad english ^^

@OP

A shove would be great, but I dont think we need a dodge.

I cant really see a dodge having a point, right now you just watch the attacks, time it and move out of the way with a string of movements.

( Side step is generally how you dodge now )

Changing that into a "Just press a Button" seems like making something good overly simplified, and I dont see any gain or reason.

Watching attack animations and waiting for the right timing and actually moving out of the way of attacks sounds more fun in PvP as well, vs 2 players standing still and just pressing dodge until they run out of stamina.

A shove button would be awesome. Also, after playing Walking Dead: Survival Instinct for the first time, why can't we have a stealthy one-hit kill attack like it? You crouch, sneak up on a zombie not facing you with a knife in hand, and hit a key to stealth kill it.

I hope they add something like this!

I think MM was talking about a 1-button assassinate from stealth.

That would be awesome. As it stands now, I NEVER stealth except in my first few nights on a new map where I am hiding. Don't really feel the stealth mechanic and strategy in this game is as it should be yet. A stealth kill mechanic would really increase the usage for me, and I am sure, many others.

Yeah, since the new zombies, stealth hasnt really been working as intended, I never use it much myself other than to know I'm sense/hunted.
