Old Question back to life: Range on Zombie senses
Hey all,

I wonder about zombies senses, how far they can detect "Active map" or player? They detect torches, workbenches that is "on", and so on.
But is there a "range" to that sense? I am building a base on a PvP server, and this time I want to make a underground base.
I was hoping that I can stay out of zombies detection range.
Anyone who knows more about this?

So, this may not be intuitive, but the game spawns zombies (specifically screamers) when the activity map in a chunk (area) gets too high. It’s computed for every chunk of the map, independent of any particular entity. The screamer’s task once spawned is to move to the chunk of the map with high activity. There are strategies to combat screamers, but staying ‘out of range’ isn’t really a concept that applies here.

Isnt it a gradient that depends on how much noise the player make?

I know I can stay 30m(30blocks) below surface and make all the noise/heat in the world, and the zombs will never agro.
They might come and investigate the surface, but the distance is clearly enough that theyl never change "mode" from curious/investigating to full agro.

And it kinda makes sense, since if im crouched and my noiseoutput is about 50 % then it seems like they wont agro at around 16m.

Overall. Just dig down to bedrock and you should be fine, unless you start from a giant deep hole.
I believe the ingame sea-lvl is around the 30m

Thank you sir!

Yeah, I am doing a base now - deeper down. But apperently screamers sniff you out anyway

I think there is a range. You can tell that if the zombies start making noise they are in your range so sneak attack no longer effect them. During blood moon they don't seem to care about range.....LOL

Bedrocking is good if u do not have a bomb and you can repair the area, other than that your dead. If you hole up in rafters that is strong. Wait till they come on blood moon and drop bombs on them if u must, but by then you prolly have enough ammo and/or arrows to kill all

Im playing an elevated base 12+ blocks high this play through and the zombies pretty much dont notice me even with forges (3) etc going, torches lit, no crouching.

Seems to be over 30 blocks up/down from the surface will cause screamers NOT to spawn anymore & over 10 blocks up/down from the surface that zombies won't notice you opening chests and such. This is based on where the PLAYER is within the chunk that's generating heat, not the items are that are causing it because heat generation affects the whole chunk vertically/z-level.

For example, if your campfires/forges/workbenches/chem stations/dew collectors are all down below 30 blocks from the surface and the player is standing on the surface, screamers are still going to spawn until the player either leaves the chunk generating the heat or they return back to their base that's 30 blocks below from the surface.

Blood moon is not affected by any of this and they will always home-in on you regardless and taking the path of least resistance.

If it’s not a screamer, forges etc. are never going to affect it. Non-screamers only care about sights or sounds that the player makes directly.

Me and a friend build bases some 100 meters apart from eachother. After we started to get some kitchens, chemstations and forges up, screamers are now a common visitor..... We have to start thinking about building some traps for the undead..... :)
