Could we have an option to pause the world timer when we are in the build menu?

I can lose half a day just looking for the right build piece.

Understandable. Some pieces are hard to figure out what they actually look like from the menu icon.
I would like this for the perk menu as well. It's obnoxious for new players/when they update, considering time flies so quickly by.

I recommend doing this the first night when waiting it out.
I'm a big fan of favoring things I use, but I like to make good looking structures too. Who knows who might drop by! :)

Use debug mode, and slide the hours/days as you wish
This would only be feasible in a single player map. If you have a multiplayer server, it would start messing up the clock

When playing solo or are the admin you have near total control over how quickly time passes.

In the General settings when starting or continuing a game you can change the "24 Hour Cycle" which controls how much time 1 day in game takes. You can also turn on debug mode at any time and change it during a game session. Hit F1, type "dm" (without quotes). Then hit Esc to open the admin menu. There is a Speed slider that controls how quickly time passes. The default is 5 and you can lower it to 1 at which point time will pass at 1/5th the normal speed.

Change it to 1, build, read up on skills, whatever, turn back to 5.

This only controls the time of day, so you and zombies move at normal speed time just passes slower.
I agree, the game should pause when opening the menu, on single player. Multiplayer is real time, its part of multiplayer, in all games.
Without dismissing the feature request… One workaround would be to jump into the prefab editor some time, and do all the experimenting you want to get familiar with what shapes there are and how they’re organized.
I don't want this as a PERK. I want this as default functionality.

IF you are in the server, alone. (like lots of us are... C'mon)

This can't happen unless they add a single player mode to the game, like it used to have.

Removing single player and consolidating it with multiplayer was a terrible move for more reasons than you mentioned.
Time is the only real penalty the devs can give a player is time. Time until night, time unbtil blood moon, time to recoup lost experience, etc. Removing any time penalty just makes the game easier.
