If you're talking about the clips on the store page, they have been updated several times since those clips were made. Try the game. It's not a bad game.

You’d have to be more specific about which graphics. The game is still being developed, and everything from Alpha 1 should be updated before the game goes gold. However, the game is fundamentally different from non-voxel games, and the fairest comparisons of graphics should be made with other voxel games.

If the game looks like ♥♥♥♥, then that is what it looks like and will turn many away. I keep finding comments on the internet stating that Unity itself is ♥♥♥♥ when it comes to 3d games and performance; so go figure. Though I have seen some good 3d games built with Unity, such as Dyson Sphere Program, and Subnautica. But those are the rare exception (built by competent devs). Edit: A pretty game doesn't make a good game *cough*Star Citizen*cough*

again i am not saying the game looks bad it just looks outdated.

like it actually looks like a 2013 game instead of a 2023 game, just wondering if the graphics will be updated to be better looking.

idc that much its just its in early access and most devs make the game look prettyer the older it gets.

Partly, voxel based terrain means there will probably be limits compared to purely polygonal games. It's computationally expensive to render fully deformable terrain and maintain very high graphical fidelity. But the devs are definitely overhauling the other static assets and props to bring them upto a somewhat higher standard.

To be honest if graphics are the only thing that is holding you back from the purchase, it's unlikely to change too much unless they do a complete texture pass on the terrain, characters etc...

The graphics have looked better with every single major update so far. So there no reason to suggest it won't continue to get better.

Personally, I'm really looking forward to the water enhancement.

See, this is where I get confused. I "see" the graphics of this game, a great game. Then I "see" the graphics of Minecraft and Project Zomboid. I am told by many I have come to trust in these forums, both also great games, I never played either. And I say to myself, "self", which graphics look good? That is the biggest reason I play this and not either of the other two.

There is too much content to simply 'update the graphics' in one fell swoop.

It's easy to just play the game and have a vague sense that the graphics are outdated. However if you look at what's there with a critical eye, you should notice a hodge podge. There are a lot of assets, like the traders and weapons, that were updated pretty recently, and arguably hold up well.

Then there are other assets, like the player character, and the water simulation, that haven't been touched in many years. There's a reason for this. The game is still being developed, and only a certain number of features are on the agenda for an update each alpha.

The devs should not be updating the graphics over and over again because something reached a time limit and is now 'too old'. Rather, they should replace placeholder assets with final assets that fulfill their vision for the finished game. That's what I was getting at when I said anything from Alpha 1 should be updated.

Regarding the above examples, we know from the current dev diary that the water simulation is getting an overhaul in the next alpha. We can deduce that an upcoming update to armor will mean major changes to player character appearance.

Some things, like the number and resolution of paintable textures, will likely remain subject to technical limitations. But wherever possible, we can expect all of the graphics (as broad as that term is) to be brought up to the same standard throughout the game.

cant wait to see the end product, i know a lot of people dont play this game cause of ea but as someone who played subnatica, the forest and a few other games in ea its nice to see a game grow.

That`s the best informational post about graphics, content, and updates, in a very long time. For any new players who come in and just ♥♥♥♥♥ about all of the above, talking out the side of their necks and just being lazy having not taken any time to really see where this game came from, or how it has grown over the years. And probably not really caring where it`s going, and wanting a little self gratification for something and who knows what, just find the oldest you can play in your Steam 7dtd list or find the oldest in a search and just look at it, sheesh. Don`t watch Avatar 2 and come in here demanding graphics like that lol. just sayin:-) Good show Josh. I`ld give my other nut to play that version my friend. Having lost one nut in the war don`t cha know. jk of course:-) But I might consider giving one, I`m so old I don`t use em anymore anyway hehe.

@mathaniel...... Yep...everytime I see someone complaining about 'graphics' of a game, I think, 'Obviously, they're too young to know what 'crappy' graphics even are.' Old timers like us that started playing out on the super old systems know that most modern games have pretty nice graphics in comparison to pre-2000's. And, they don't understand the different types of game programming cuz they must think all games are made using photo's taken from a camera or something. Most games just aren't done that way. Artists have to create their scenes. I challenge anyone to use Windows Paint app and make something that looks better than what's created in 7d2d. I'm sure there's some spectacular artists that can do it (yes, I know there are better apps) but, I sure as heck ain't one of them.

It will never look like UE game.
They are adding better models/textures/assets etc. but don't expect full overhaul to modern graphics.

Tbh - screw graphics, it's ok - long awaited new player models will be added in A21 + better water.
But Jesus those animations ;(

Well, maybe not everyone have so much free time as you do. But yeah, calling others 'lazy' is just easier.
Also why new player should even care about 10 years of early access? Game looks crappy/junky - that's it. Doesn't matter what kind of improvement have been made since first release. It's rated as it is now.

The graphics are the game's least issue.
they rather should start adressing the bugs and eventually start following a common thread for the future development instead of overhauling it each update.

Also don't expect too much from voxel graphics.
