Crossbow alone made that a joke. Feathers are also way easier to find than they were and thus Crossbow Bolts are now plentiful. Sneak attack the dogs 1st priority, headshot the cops 2nd priority. You do this in the day and there is no reason to die or likely even get hit.
I think I have to kill like 20 zombies each run, but after getting the sledgehammer that's just plain easy even if I miss a dog.
I dunno, just compared to starting out on the static map starting out now feels tons easier all the way around, but I'll continue to test new random maps.
Increase your difficulty, craft timers, decrease loot, if game is too easy.
Low loot, low player damage tend to make things much harder
I actually greatly appreaciate them making gunpowder charges because gunpowder was way too easy to achieve before in much the way some other resources are now.
I'm sorry it just felt cheap to be day 3 and overflowing with every possible resource with zombies set to high spawn. Resources not actually coming from zombie corpses mind you. I don't think I should have to jack up the challenge more just to receive a respectable challenge.
Though the new injury mechanics do at least help a bit if you let zombies get too close.
7 Days I feel has the best "building mode" of all the survival games I've played currently. Though the inability to craft fully upgraded blocks in your inventory is a bit annoying. It also has the best NPC threat of them. However it's resource scarcity needs some work to be on the level of Rust or even Starforge. (which is not quite balanced yet either).
All resource is rather easily collectable, not just iron from girders.
Either way, low loot, low player damage, high zombie damage, 200% block durability, will make your gathering experience much tougher. I don't know if you have tried that, but it's not particularly easy.
I just personally don't see the point of survival mode if there is not any survival. You might as well be playing creative mode if it's too easy to get resources. It also takes away from the accomplishment of getting a place.
I mean this isn't the most perfect thing ever but it was quite an accomplishment and it felt good to finally get it nearly completeed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7bZp85q6yk&list=UU8IGoiCaUXFMgaubg3c12jw
But in the current game I'd be able to do that in a fraction of the time. Heck I'm even finding coffee beans easier lol. (Also the tower and the home are connected via tunnel, that's not shown in the video :D)
Incidentally you can put the scrap girders directly into the forge, you don't need to convert them to scrap iron. Each girder will yield one bar.
A full stack of 64 iron ingots will convert to 96 rebar frames; and you could very easily use up hundreds of rebar frames in a base. You'll still need to mine all the stone to make the cobblestones.
As of Alpha 9.0; iron ore can be found at all levels of the underworld and each ore yeilds two iron ingots. There is no shortage of iron in the randomly generated worlds, or Navezgane.
I stone hatcheted like 5 girders and came back out with a pickaxe and a sledgehammer (had a little iron from rocks before that). So yeah, was a matter of minutes.
It's not even that anymore. Now it's get to day 3-5 and I have everything I need and I might as well be in creative mode. Crossbolt Bolts are now extremely plentiful and some resources are more plentiful as well. Build a house on stilts and good to go. Though even without stilts just build high enough and good to go.
What I'm trying to say is that you can choose settings that make the game more challenging. While iron resources may be easy, some other things are still hard.
It's a sandbox game, it's up to you to find your own goals.
To make it more difficult
Put loot at 25%.
Turn off loot respawn.
Put your damage at minimum. you'll use much more ammo, and will need to repair weapons/tools more often.
I guarantee, you will run out of feathers in a week, and you will need to go further and further. Eventually you'll either need to start a mine for lead/copper or move.
Of course one can build a fortress with farm and a mine, and not have any reason to ever leave it.
I just tested this out with 25% loot drops, very high zombie spawns, and 50% player damage to NPC's. I still ended up with a full "safe" house that was 9X9, full iron tools, and a 9X9 farm by day 4. I also had 50 crossbow bolts despite my hunting and zombie killing. Even with many troll bird nests the forest just has ALOT of bird nests.
This is with those settings cranked up and not even using the iron girders this time (which would have made this go faster.).
I feel like the static map has a pretty good balance to it and the random gen just makes things quite a bit easier. They just need to do some testing, mine some data, and try to balance it out a little more is all.
At first I thought I wanted to use iron blocks for the foundation before I realised 3 stacks isn't crap.
