Worst. Night. Ever.
Started a new game. Did the usual things; punched grass, picked up rocks, put down and picked up my bedroll, built a wooden cube then smashed it. Typical new game stuff.

Wander over to the trader. Hello, Jen. My, you're a sight for sore eyes (and ears) after having Rekt on my last map. (I decided to start over after I wasn't happy with some choices I made with my stat upgrades)

Wander a little further down the road and find a nice Fire Station to set up an initial base in. Plan to run some quests and scavanging out of it, for the first week or two, before building my own base. It's solid and respectibly defensible (imo).

Clear out the zombies, slap down a couple of chests, my bedroll, a campfire, and settle in for the night. Sure, I lost a door and a window, but it's only THE FIRST NIGHT, there shouldn't be any major issues, right?

Right?

WRONG!

As I'm ogling my stats, and deciding where to allocate my first five points (I made level 2 while clearing zeds), I hear a noise I did not like. Growling and barking. Oh, joy. A dog. I don't like dogs. They're a pain in the ne- OH #@$% IT'S A DIRE WOLF AND IT'S COMING UP THE STAIRS.

I poke and jab it with my stone spear while panicing and trying to flee. I run into the next room, forgetting that I actually can't get out of that room. But, somehow, I got lucky and the dumb, oversized mutt got stuck on the railing. So, I stand there for a few minutes just poking it with my pointy rock-on-a-stick. He eventually dies.

Now to go down stairs and take care of the other zombies banging on things. OH @#$% IT'S A SCREAM!!!! WTF?! It chases me outside and mauls me to death.

I respawn. It's dark. I'm level 2 and have NOTHING to fight with. Bugger it. I'll use my fists.

NO. WAIT. THERE'S A SECOND SCREAMER and he's brought some fat dude with glowing red eyes.

For FOUR HOURS (in game time) I die, respawn, walk out of the top room, throw 3-5 punches, die, respawn, throw 3-5 punches, and every time there's another (regular) zombie that has joined the party.

The FIRST NIGHT. On Default, Adventurer difficulty. I have a Dire Wolf, TWO Screamers, and a Fat Guy From Hell IN MY BASE.

WHAT?! Wha... What is this? Why? WHY?!

Come on, Devs. What gives? How the #$@% is someone meant to contend with THAT on their first night? I call shenanigans.

EDIT: It has come to my attention that the Screamers were in fact Spiders. I referred to them as Screamers because they, well, screamed at me. I wasn't aware there was, in fact, an ACTUAL Screamer class zombie.

Sorry but it looks like you bring it on yourself.

Difficulty setting, presumably. Or you had higher game stage than you should have, or you were in the wasteland or something. Under normal circumstances you shouldn't see screamers on the first night. You'd have to go out of your way and light like 50 camp fires to make a screamer spawn that early.

On insane, you can get ferals and dire wolves on the first night. It's rare but it happens. Sneaking usually makes them easy to avoid unless you've also got the game set to feral senses.

All of these things are possible, but only if you go out of your way to set up the game to make them possible.

It appears the game is working perfectly. Dogs and dire wolves do seem to be more plentiful than prior alphas. The screamers might have been a bad digital dice throw. My advice, and you may have already done this, knock out the stairs and stay on the second floor. Before all that get a bunch of feathers, wood and stone and craft arrows. Kill from your advantage. Trying to punch out the Fat Hawaiian at level 2 is always a bad idea. When all else fails, run away, far away.

Feral sense was set to off.
Difficulty set to Adventurer (Default)
I lit my campfire for about 30 seconds to boil a couple of jars of water.

Location, uh.... There was a desert nearby. As in, visible from where I was, but would still take an hour or two (in game time) to walk over to it. Otherwise, it was a pretty standard, green area, with trees and stuff.

All my experience settings are on their defaults.

Same settings, I had a Dire Wolf ambush me from a mechanic building, two doors down from the trader, on day 3, the previous map.

I play on a casual server, i spawned near a supermarket with a bunch of Zs on top and a single fat cop spitting inside the main floor. Then i found out there was a mid level between main floor and the rooftop (basically ceilling) with more loot and zombies. Basically rooftop had a rad, lumberjack, tourists and some others. I managed to kill the weaker Zs, i lured the stronger ones into the main floor by forcing them to drop down from the rooftop. A few moments later as i loot the ceilling, a player comes in with a shotgun and wipes the Zs i lured under. I struggled to kill the cop initially, he blew up in my face after some hits but i survived. But that one rad Z was constantly killing me and i couldn't do enough damage to bring him down.

Rads are pretty damn OP early on. I ended up dead in the ceilling again as a tourist went full aggro from the rooftop, he went all the way around the rooftop and dropped down the ladder and fell on my head when i was low in health.

Schoolboy error mate sorry. Clear building day 1 tick, get up on second floor or even better roof tick, remove access route to second floor or roof and replace with a ladder - ya didnt do it.

You know zeds can climb ladders, right? Even if the giant black dog didn't get up the ladders, others would've.

As a new player myself i found in my first attempt at playing that i was constantly being killed by wolves i did not even see creeping up behind me and one shoting me i was dead before i ever saw them happened a lot in my second attempt this never happened

Wolves and dogs I can contend with. They're a right pain in the backside, but they're managable. Their biggest problem is that they're fast, so they can get hits in on you faster. Keep backing up and poking them with a spear, they go down soon enough. It's only when there's more than one or two that wolves/dogs become a serious threat.

Dire Wolves, on the other hand, have considerably more health and do substantially more damage. So, a little stone spear isn't going to do much.

The last Dire Wolf I faced, on my previous map, I unloaded over half a clip into it, with a pipe rifle, before it went down.

I just... I don't know where these guys came from. I fully expected to have to poke a regular zombie or two, on the stairs, because I had an open door and window. I had next to nothing to fix/block those. But, a couple of regular zombies ambling up the stairs wouldn't have been an issue. But, what came at me was something I would've thought to have to deal with post-level 12, or something. I don't know. Not at level 2, on the first night.

I don't know if there is a bug that made them spawn early, or if I got a REALLY crap RNG roll. I don't know if it's because I was in a town (on the edge of a town).

I lost nothing. My bag of stuff was still outside, and not going anywhere soon. I wasn't over level 6 so I didn't have the exp debuff. I just kept respawning and bare fisting them until they FINALLY died. If anything, it made the night go faster because I wasn't just sitting there, twiddling my thumbs waiting for daylight.

It's just baffling that this happened.

There's your problem. The stairs should have been removed or blocked. Try again.

Yes, yes, the stairs. The stairs. Let's all just ignore the fact that there was FOUR very powerful zombies on my doorstep on the FIRST NIGHT.

Not ignoring anything. Simply stating that you could have easily made it much harder for them to reach you. That is all.

It's the screamers I don't get. As far as I know, they don't spawn outside of the activity map - certainly not in the forest. From your description, I don't know what you could've done to build up that much activity. I don't get screamers when I'm just puttering around my base, even in the late game with guns and lights running all the time.
