Train system?
I just got to thinking. How cool would it be if it was possible to use a train in 7 days to die. Think minecraft only on a much larger and much more elborate scale. It would be pretty neat if on every map there was a rail network that connected all major cities with the possibility to expand said rail network by producing more rail lines and creating junctions. I figured we could have a sort of steam/diesel engine train that runs off of coal/wood or biodiesel/diesel. Wood would be the least efficent and it would take vast amounts of wood to run the steam engine and coal would be leagues more efficent. Same goes for Diesel. Biodiesel would be easy to craft but not as efficent vs Diesel manufacturered by shale oil.

To aquire the train you would have to find a small stretch of rail line on a level grade and its assembly would be similar to any other vehicle in this game. Piece by piece you would have to craft and assemble it until you had it completed. It would require a tremendous amount of steel, iron, mechanical parts, etc along with finding/buying the schematics for each part including the steam/diesel engine.

Once completed you will be able to travel on the pre-existing rail network or any additional rail lines you have built. The train would have an incredibly large storage capacity making it possible for you to haul ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of raw materials and loot back to your base.

I know this is not the most practical idea or even a very good idea especially with the new jeep we will be getting but i always liked the idea of using pre-existing infrastructure in apocalypse games and i think a train would be a great end game goal to work for. If nothing else it would be something cool for a modder to implement if they ever felt the inclination to do so.

Those would require the developper to rebuild the entire map generation engine. You can't have a random generation that all connect together.

Maybe on Navezgane...

Disregard, wrong forum.

Before any trains you would have a lot of fixing to do with the 200 year old railbed, fixing switches that would be rust welded together, etc. Some of the old roadbeds are even buried from upheavals, etc. You could use teams of captured deathclaws, bots, or Super Mutants or Behemoths as a lo tech option. Sounds like enough ideas for a good mod.
You might have the wrong game forum.

Excellent suggestion but i think this is something for the modding community to tackle more likely.

I like the idea, right up there with an abandoned subway tunnel system.

Sure you could- You could tie it to a POI that would only appear in populated areas and then link the pois together with the rail- Might not look pretty and would work far better with an underground subway but it could be done.

I'd say modding something like that is probably a pipe dream though because it seems like the amount of systems you would need would have to be hardcoded or would require massive effort to tackle.

I love the idea but realistically I dont think we're going to see it, modded or otherwise.

Eh, would be better as something the player has to build, rather than something that's part of worldgen, IMO. Something like the traincraft mod for minecraft (No, not railcraft, traincraft. http://traincraft-mod.blogspot.com/p/default.html )

yea i like this player made rail system idea better than one that already appears on the map cos as suggested it might end up pretty wonky on random gen maps just like the roads and such

Wait for the game being finished. The modders will start working...

a lot of games just dont really need trains, 7dtd included.

That traincraft mod has dinky little train cars about 4 meters long, and it's in the super blocky cartoony MineCraft world. It would need to be a lot different to fit in the 7DtD world. Most people that want trains are imagining something much bigger. That creates big problems, because the rest of the game is built around 1 meter chunks at the foundational level.

If it's only in Navezgane and if the train never has to go up, down, or turn, then okay. Otherwise, you need inclines and slopes, and they have to be gentle or it's going to look awful when the train animates. But long, gentle slopes are a voxel game's worst nightmare, and you'd be fighting the engine every step of the way.

This would be a neat idea but i could already see someone modding in a NPC conductor that said "welcome aboard the lag train" lol

It's always someone fresh from Minecraft who makes these posts.

Look man, if you want mine carts.... play MineCraft.

MadMole has already flat out stated TFP have no plans for anything like that.
Although..... that was before electricity came out.... so it's not like there's NO hope.

Here's the thing:

"Do we really need them in 7 Days to Die?"

I can't see why we would.
I've built massive and elaborate structures and never needed anything like that to transport materials. Just use the mini bike and backpack and it's fine.
[Cough..... and perhaps I've modded in a larger mini bike inventory.... uh... and larger stack sizes.... ehem]

I haven't played minecraft in years m8. I just figured it would be an interesting endgame goal to restore a rail network and have fun with a train for the hell of it. We dont NEED a train but there is many things in this game that we dont really NEED but would be fun to play with none the less. I woulden't expect this to be a thing from an offical content standpoint but as a mod i think it would be pretty great.

Very neat and original idea.

It could be fairly fun to have a train base, travel around to various spots. A place to mine coal to fuel your train, a place for food, a place for random other supplies. Maybe you can build your own track or maybe the track semi-broken in places and needs to be repaired.
