With the potential for ferals on Day 1 I can see where newer players are going to have infection issues. I haven't gotten jumped twice and beaten badly while looting in many Alphas. It was nice, and reminded me of my Struggle Bus days back when A16 went stable and I bought the game.
As for the "Honey Alternative", the droprate is so insanely low from tree stumps, that when they finally drop, all it did was stall enough time between the next time you manage to actually find honey and I found myself chopping down tree stumps for entire days.
As for the obligatory apologists that always rear their ugly heads on these types of posts, here are my preemptive retorts to your obvious incoming "suggestions".
1. [Just get physician maxed and craft antibiotics!]
I don't have 20 talent points sitting around at the beginning of the game...
2. [Go find a Poppin' Pills Factory!]
If I have to hop from town to town to find a very specific building, by that time the infection is red...
3. [Just kill yourself and respawn!]
That defeats the purpose and "sport" of a survival game and essentially admits that the Infection is too overpowered to treat...
4. [Just don't get hit by zombies!]
Go get hit by a bus IRL...
That'll conclude my primary gripe with the game for now. I'll rant about Dire Wolves some other time :)
#1 use a spear, it has much further reach then other melee weapons, allowing you to kite away without much risk,
#2 use brawling, with the first point a punch to the head prevents any and all chance of infection from that zombie.
To give a bit of context though, my current save it's day 5, I've got 4 honey, two herbal antibiotics, and a single full antibiotic(on 100% loot), and have only died once so far, to hunger, or rather I got tired of slowly starving to death so I had the character eat glass.
If you want better chances though there's always the loot % option in the game(world) settings, pushing it up will allow you to find more of everything though, and not just honey.
Some advice for OP - Armor helps avoid infection. And getting hit several times in a row is what causes debuffs. After taking one or two hits, back off a bit instead of being 100% aggressive. Try to Stay mobile instead of standing still absorbing many hits.
