That's because I give them a way to enter my subway base without needing to dig...
Really only for PVP, a stash/hidden base... but not one you normally use.
I used to build bunkers a lot, but the digging mechanic ruined that. But if you turn off bloodmoon it's not an issue as most wandering hordes will not detect you down there.. just the screamers
and even then, the screamers are only drawn to the heat levels of the chunk. They don't summon swarms unless they actually spot you. Recessed spike traps tend to make short work of them.
Well, your loot is safer there, and you can have a 45 degree tunnel running from under your base.... so you can also do all your mining down there in safety.
Plus, you dig long enough, you end up with tunnels leading to each trader, and can ride a bike back and forth like taking the subway.
You can still put a lot of blocks, with cumulatively a lot of HP, between you and the zombies. Remember, they may dig down now, but it’s not like they won’t ‘dig’ sideways, e.g. through your walls, to get to you at the surface. So the gap in viability between above ground versus underground bases has narrowed.
And you build all the way down at the bedrock level, there's no way for the zombies to undermine the base. You have an unbreakable floor.

This is the inside (following the ramp down):

The trick is to surround yourself all with high HP blocks and leave the ramp as the only easy access: all zombies will sooner or later come down from there.
Impressive!
looks really cool
Most build underground so they don't have to deal with the zombies. I like dealing with them. I did enjoy the horde base part of my build. It was a sweet set up. My only complaint was I had to use the same hole to get out of my crafting base as the zombies used to get into my horde base. That game got deleted before I could fix my way of entrance though. I started not liking my play through and would procrastinate going down to the base. I knew it was time to call it done when I found myself happily crouching on some random roof throwing rocks at the zeds to draw them in closer so I could snipe them dead. >:)
Before, there was less gameplay if you built underground. Namely, there was no interaction with zombies. Now there is. They fixed problems with the AI, so that more gameplay that occurs when above ground can also occur when underground.
In other words, not only can you still build underground, but TFP actually added gameplay to that domain. This was a win for anyone on the side of more gameplay. And I would argue more gameplay if anything means more fun, not less.
