Removed apparently because there was some sort of exploit when placing them in advanced rotations. I don't remember the specifics of the exploit, and never heard anything official about if that's why they were really removed. Could have been for some other reason.
IMO, they were insanely OP (even without any exploit). Because they had a massive multiplier on leg damage and would covert all zombies to helpless crawlers pretty much automatically. Three to five rows of them, built for a small amount of wood and iron, would defeat an entire late game horde night, literally while the player sat back and watched.
If you want strong spikes, the intention is that you now use iron spikes, which were purposefully designed to be traps instead of made to do damage as an afterthought.
They were fun to have for an easy horde night, but yeah, they were also OP as all hell.
I would like to see them in action IRL....
