But a lot of players take over an existing building or alter an existing building which can save you some materials though you risk the building respawning zombies in a week or two if you don't place a Bedroll, LandClaimBlock or both (I can't remember which is more important, and the bedroll "safe area" zone is really small by default).
Bedroll is still important for giving yourself a ReSpawn point either way, and LandClaimBlock is still important for letting you pick up any Workbenches, ChemStations and forges you placed within the LandClaim safe zone.
Almost all blocks in this game can be upgraded to better blocks.
A Land Claim Block will stop any zombies you found (and killed) in that building from respawning within it, which covers a fair sized area (while looking at the block when placed hold "R" for an option to see how large an area it is. If you feel you placed it wrong, it's cheap to make another). A bedroll will stop anything from spawning within its area (as well as being the normal spawn point you expect from it), though that area is not very big.
Don't put anything important on the ground floor. A friend and I found that out the hard way when they got in once.
What new ones are you referring to if I may ask?
Depends on the player. I for example, find and reinforce the toughest existing buildings and very rarely build my own bases. Others go full custom. As a new player I'd recommend finding a small building (POI) made of brick and use that as a base until you get familiar with it all. Make sure to drop a bedroll and land claim block to limit respawns and you should be fine.
If The Infected and Left for Dead had an evil offspring this would be it.
I have to admit I stayed away from this game for a long time but it's captivating and I underestimated it by a mile.
I just did T4 Utility Waterworks and it was an epic zombie adventure like no other.
I would guess most players will use a pre existing building during the first week or two.
After that if they like building they will build their own base, if they don't like building or like the layout / feel of the building they will stay.
Just don't dig caves under your base, it can affect structural integrity.
If you use a pre built aka POI do NOT active a trader quest at your base, and understand you may get zombie respawns. ( sometimes the bedroll / landclaim dont work properly)
I do both, but if I have the time and resources before the Blood Moon I’ll make my own. I find most existing buildings are too big, and how the zombies will navigate and attack them on horde night is too hard to predict. But if I find, say, a brick or concrete building remnant with no sleeper zombies, that can form an excellent skeleton to flesh out with defenses.
By the way, conventional wisdom is to have one ‘base’ for crafting and storing your stuff, and a second unattached ‘base’ exclusively for fighting the Blood Moon.
I don't know how the base defense goes in Minecraft as I only played just a little of that but I find 7DTD having pretty good base defense mechanics. I do enjoy making my own bases and testing them against the weekly hordes. So far, I haven't found any other game like 7DTD other than The Forest when it comes to defending hordes of hostile AI. Even then, I don't build my bases in The Forest against hordes of enemies (although it's possible).
Off-topic here, one of my pals is really into Minecraft but for whatever reason though, he wasn't interested in 7DTD for some reason. I was the opposite funny enough.
Keep in mind that there is a small ramp up period as you get used to the game, especially with finding enough food. You may die a lot early on as you discover how things work. Your first hoard night (Day 7 if you leave it at default) may feel overly difficult.
Watch a few 'Getting Started' videos on You Tube and you should be ok.
